Yesterday, I was watching the Fairfield game and the announcers were talking about how this year will not count as per NCAA against a player's eligibility and the announcers were discussing the possibility of Cruz returning for a fifth year. How many MAAC players do you expect to take advantage of this extra year and what have you heard?

They should have set this rule up with the caveat that you can only get two years for one if they are both with the same program. Seems silly to me that you could play two seasons for two different programs and have it only count as one year of eligibility.

this isn't a forgone conclusion for any school..........even though there will be allowances to expand the roster beyond the 13 scholarships that currently exist, it will be up to each institution to decide whether they would allow it.........and what I am getting at, is the cost to extend another year (scholarship) for player(s)..............that conversation I had with the athletic dept and what it really means for recruiting and the college, as to how it would be managed or affordable.................great to get players back, but at what cost to the school..................and yes this Covid mess has really done a number on the season, but in general (at least) these student athletes have had the opportunity to complete and play in their sport (hoop)............it seems more logical that if the sport season was completely cancelled, or cut dramatically short (say only completing 1/3 of it), or their school opted out or even the student athlete was the one that opted out, ONLY in those instances should an extra year be granted automatically..................what you will have now, is the course of action of the high profile schools in all the large revenue sports with huge athletic budgets being able to keep many of the players an extra year..........is that really fair or the right thing to do, talk about taking advantage of the system and the athletes themselves (they don't belong in school forever either)....................and additionally, the NCAA has tabled the "no waiver" transfer rule, so it remains to be seen if they again vote to allow those to occur as they did the prior season to make athletes available right away (that does nothing but create further chaos with the already growing # of transfers occurring now without it)...............

In fairness that should be extended to everyone on the roster ... otherwise some players lose a year to move up and have their own shining moment

here is a really in-depth read on this subject if you have an ESPN+ subscription.................. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/insider/story/_/id/30951515/why-college-basketball-free-year-going-make-some-difficult-conversationsthis along with the transfer rule (which has yet to be voted on and no time table is currently set for that vote) will make it more difficult for coaches to navigate the recruiting process as they may not typically know who is coming and who is going until much closer to next season............different philosophies on recruiting are likely to develop, does a coach try to get HS kids (which they haven't been able to see live in person) that might be talented but lose them in a year anyway or do they go the transfer portal to go shopping for the likely 1500 athletes looking for a new home.............you can pick a side on this subject, but in the grand scheme of things, I am not sure this really benefits college basketball overall, the trickle down effect to the smaller schools like Siena could be very impactful in a negative way competitively and other mid-majors............the larger echelon schools won't be effected as much (more able financially to keep kids an extra year) since they can simply cherry pick more talent and it may result in the "separation" that some have been pushing for years now between those power schools and the rest (like what you see in college football but likely to a greater difference)..........oh, these times are a changing.......

I'm building at least half of my roster on impact transfers (A10, BCS etc). You have to adapt. Once they transfer to YOU then they'd have to sit if they were going to move again. This is a way the better mid-majors will handle it. Also I have to think the grad transfer is gone now. You get one free move period.
