This years team certainly looks to have an embarrassment of depth and talent. Carm is going to have many choices on players on the floor and rotations. Love how Siena can go big or small-- adjust player rotations according to match ups and who has hot hand. On paper this is a real athletic group. I think many MAAC teams will struggle with Saints team athleticism. Cant wait to see team play dailygazette.com/2020/10/29/versatility-key-for-siena-mens-basketball/

I think this may be a team that starts off slow in OOC play but then puts it together a few weeks into season by league play. There are a lot of new additions to the team. They need time to get on the same page and learn how to play together. I felt much more confident when we had four returning starters and were just replacing Burns. Now that's down to three. Which means at least two people are going to be newly inserted into the starting lineup, which is a big change.
I believe it'll be come down to Young vs. Curry for the starting 5 spot, and Carpenter v. Hopkins at the 2. Either way, there's good depth at those spots. Then you've got a sniper in Jordan King coming off the bench, and Dana Tate waiting in the wings when he becomes eligible. And watch out for a sophomore jump from Harris. I think we got a preview of what he could become at Cal Poly last season. I expect to still mostly run four big guards out there and a big man. But I like that they can go with a conventional 1-5 lineup if need be. I've read they plan to play even faster now that they've got quality depth. That's going to be fun to watch.

I will have to see the schedule but Pickett and Camper are as good a returning 1/2 punch as most non top 50 teams in the country are going to have. I don't expect struggles in the OOC portion. I expect this team to come out firing and just get better. Only wild card is something they can't control and that is what sort of talent Pitino has coming into New Rochelle and how well that talent gels. And of course the injury bug can always derail a season but having such a deep roster has put Siena in the best position possible to overcome that.

Further, not to speak ill of the departed but let's be honest when remember DC. He is a player that often had BAD shooting nights and regularly had very bad TOs. He had a lot of great moments too so please don't think I am saying he wasn't a good player. The Saints have Carpenter, Hopkins and King to replace the DC and spell Pickett. So, in my opinion at worst the overall production from the 1-2 will be the same as last year and there is good chance it will improve. Improvement is all but guaranteed if Harris make the sophomore jump and Tate integrates nicely with the team as they will draw a fair amount of attention.

The fact we had AC and Tate for 2nd half of last year will pay huge dividends early in the year.

And as much as we will miss the leadership and offensive skills of Elijah Burns we will actually likely be a better defensive team without him. Elijah could never be aggressive on defense and risk foul trouble because we were too dependent on him being on the court. This year the bigs will have plenty of fouls to give and can make opposing bigs earn their points at the line.

Your point is well-taken, and I know that fouls are inevitable, particularly inside near the basket, but I hate putting the other team on the line for shots for which there is no defense. A decent foul-shooting team, or even a team that doesn't have good FT numbers, but is having an unusually good night at the line, can win a game they shouldn't. Much prefer Fran's approach............make more free-throws than the other team takes.

True read on the advantage of making more FT's than the other team, Fran was a winner with that focal point. I do think being able to keep a withering physical presence down low is worth something and having the numbers it looks like we will have has to be a strength...how many times in the past have we seen other teams rally when we have had to bench some inside muscle with no equivalent replacements for work on both ends of the floor...

I think we're to miss Burns more than people are expecting. He was dominant inside. The team won't have that this season. Carey will be easier to replace - but he's going to be missed too. When he was on, he was unstoppable.

I think Curry will be effective inside. We'll miss the things you cant see without Burns. His leadership, in my opinion, was why the team turned into such an unselfish unit. That "team first" mentality was the driving force behind our 10 game winning streak. It was really fun to watch. The passing. the cheering on of the guy that is playing ahead of you etc....
One thing Elijah did that not many people noticed. He would outlet the ball so quickly. In midair sometimes in order to get the fast break started. He really knew how to play.

I love the idea that we can afford to be more aggressive inside but hopefully we can play aggressive plus under control so as not to foul as much. However, the fact that we have options at the front line we can afford to give some fouls w/o a material drop off at C. A good position to be in.

One thing Elijah did that not many people noticed. He would outlet the ball so quickly. In midair sometimes in order to get the fast break started. He really knew how to play. Here's what we'll miss most: when taking it to the rim, one of two things usually happened. Burns would either score - or get fouled. And when he got fouled, which was often, an 86% free throw shooter was being sent to the line. He was as close to automatic as you could get if you needed points in a tight game. The only reason he wasn't first team all league was because his knees were shot - limiting him to 26 mpg. Siena is going to have a lot more bodies to throw out at the 5. And collectively they will contribute. But none singly are going to be as effective an offensive threat as Burns was. Our best case scenario is two guys combined replace his scoring numbers. But we're not getting his nearly automatic free throw shooting. Curry shot 67% his last go around and Young was around 57%. Stormo played so little his entire career, we don't even have an adequate sample size. That's huge in how opponents defend Siena. It's worth fouling our bigs now.

Burns might have been the best, most efficient shooters in the country, % wise. If you add up his shooting %'s from the field, FT lne and 3 pt line, it was over 200. Im betting you can't find half a dozen other players in the country that could say that.

After all we have the best PnR PG in country feeding the post. My biggest concern going into season is replacing Burns leadership. Carm has a lot of bullets in chamber. Keeping every one of those "players" on same page as far as PT and shots goes will go a long way as to how successful this team is
