Deans list student if the twitter feed is any indication. www.verbalcommits.com/players/nicholas-hopkinsI don't think there is any reason NOT to call this kid. He's a perfect replacement. Doesn't even affect 2021 recruiting. I mean, seriously, did we call him yet?

I can see him thinking like other kids looking to go higher, but hopefully we can get on him and sell him the PT.

You sell him on a master's degree in his field of study that provides a future to fall back on. However, you also sell him on a starting spot for a potential NCAA team (like Belmont was), only in a better conference and alongside Jalen Pickett and Manny Camper....and a chance to raise your stock to play in Europe at least. He would be perfect and even potentially an upgrade in speed, defensive energy, and even offensive polish. One issue is HE might want to play PG as well. There's only 2 guys with better A/TO in the nation last year than Jalen Pickett and Belmont's Grayson Murphy was one of them. Hopkins may want to play PG. Trading Murphy for Pickett might not be what he wants. I hope he doesn't think that way though. He could have a hell of a senior year at Siena.

Hopkins certainly looks like a great match. There are minutes to fill, starting lineup likely and NCAA potential with a quality Masters program that matches his area of study. Well worth a sales pitch from Carm and staff. If the match seems right for him and Carm make the offer. Carm knows what is currently on his roster if he thinks this is an upgrade go for it.

Carm seemed to be aware of Donald Carey's choice to move on after last season.I will give Donald credit for staying on after Jamion left him to go to GW.Thank You Donald and good luck moving forward in your basketball career! GO SAINTS!!

Props to Don for graduating in three years and best of luck to him.
My guess is that he wanted to make sure he would graduate before entering the portal, since sit-1, play-1 is not nearly as attractive to another school as a sit-0, play-2. Plus he has a much greater chance to make an impact with two seasons to play.
I know when I met his Dad at the Yale game, he said Don “loves Siena.” I hope the opportunity he perceives at another program turns out to be very good.
What does surprise me is that I thought I heard Carm announce within the past month or so that Manny and Don would be captains. That kind of announcement does not fit with this one.

I think Carm was surprised by this departure. Knew it would happen next year, like we all did, but not this year.
IF he knew, he would have kept recruiting good guards to take his scholarship, and if he didnt graduate, or changed his mind, he pulls the plug on Ratliffe. All if he was forced to offer a new guard to take some of Careys minutes.

That is my line of thinking, they probably had the conversation when Carm first got the job and he sold Carey on sticking around and taking extra classes to make sure he graduates and then would have his options. Carey starts working his butt off to try and get done in 3 years while Carm assumed he would be around another year. Carey waits to tell Carm until he's sure he will graduate early cause he doesn't want to burn any bridges if he can't get the credits. I imagine Carm will learn from this and keep a closer eye on all the players' transcripts and who could potentially graduate early going forward.

To think the staff wasn’t aware of where Don stood is crazy, they know exactly how many credits he had and what his off season course load was....no way they weren’t aware. I believe he may have told Carm he was planning on being here two years but had a change of heart and reneged on what was previously discussed. If so, that’s a low ball move, especially this late ... which is a pretty good indication he stiffed Carm. Personally I think Carm is taking the high road here ...... no way we sign 3 bigs if he thinks DC is walking!

Ding ding... they knew it was possible he’d do it in three but the communication wasn’t there so they thought he’d be here one more. Wonder how different it would have been if everyone was on campus.

Kids being home rather than on campus just contributes more to these situations. In other years he would have been at Siena most of summer and possibly more bonding with team and coaches. This summer he is home and around others whispering in his ear so different influences may have Contributed to it.

OK I’ll say it, maybe if Carm, AW, and the rest of the staff spent more time communicating with the players over the past month or so and less time setting up the Coaches4Change platform they wouldn’t have been blindsided.

The rationale behind this decision is odd. Don had to have led the team in turnovers. Poor court vision led to some real poor passes. He came into his own shooting at the end of the season. Weird decision. I totally agree with you. Carey did some good things for us last year and had a few excellent games but he certainly isn't a PG. Have we lost depth? Obviously, but I held my breath every time Carey got the ball last season. Holds the ball too long and didn't know half the time what to do with it. I hope he can find a situation he will be happy in. Best of luck to the young man but we'll be fine.
