What is FT% defense? That can't be Free Throw % defense because there isn't any.

What is FT% defense? That can't be Free Throw % defense because there isn't any. There's really no such thing, of course. However, by the numbers, opposing teams shot very well from the FT line vs. Siena (74.4%)....when we put them there...which luckily wasn't very much. That was good for 327th in the nation. Hopefully, we get some luck going the other way this year...and teams make even less FTs this year and it helps the team. I'm thinking a reversal of this should benefit us some this year. Aside from this mainly luck related stat, the fact is that Siena's main weakness as a team is forcing TO's. This is where guys like Pickett and Carpenter really need to help us turn things around. Even with as great a PG Pickett is, in MAAC play Siena turned it over 1.8 times more per game than it's MAAC opposition. And it's largely because we don't force TOs. You shouldn't have a negative TO margin with a generational type PG like Pickett. You really shouldn't. I'm looking to Carpenter to help Pickett with the TO margin on both sides of the ball this year. And hopefully, Carey takes a step forward on both sides as well. Siena needs to have a positive TO margin. Right now, they're relying a lot on rebounding margin for possessions. BOTH can be improved this year.

When I asked Carm about the TO margin weakness and forcing TOs, as it relates to smaller lineups, this was his response:
"Great question. Our ball pressure was not to my liking last year. When we were able to pressure the ball and make teams uncomfortable we were tougher to score on. I do anticipate us playing with smaller lineups. I also think our roster additions will help with offensive versatility."
Carm knows it's an issue and he keeps remarking on Carpenter being able to guard 94ft. This is key into why I think Carpenter will play a lot. He could help on both sides.
Also, his remark in versatility suggests leaning towards Tate as a PF/C....which would help prevent offensive TOs. A lineup of Pickett, Carpenter, Carey, Camper, Tate would protect the ball like nobody's business....to the point where maybe you don't HAVE to force as many TOs to win the TO margin. And if Carpenter could help force some more while defending on the ball and allow Pickett to ballhawk off the ball like he did with Smithen, it could help even more.
The only issue with this is Tate's shooting efficiency and how well he rebounds/defends the interior. What you gain in TO margin....you may lose in other places like rebounding margin, scoring efficiency, and defense. If Tate comes out playing like a faster, better ballhandling Burns...then most of this worry goes away. If he's shooting poorly, Siena may need to trade off Tate and stick with beefing up rebounding margin via Young/Golson/Curry etc.
To me, these are some of Siena's biggest questions this year and they could make Siena vulnerable at times.
