One time there was a pre-season game at the ARC. I was watching the team warm up courtside, with my toddler daughter holding my hand next to me. Matt came over and rolled the ball to her and played a game of "catch" for a good 20 seconds. She was thrilled at seeing such a big guy treat her so gently. A good memory. Matt was a great guy. RIP--

Matt was a classic. The fact is most of the guys i got to know over the years were similar. Siena and in particular the basketball program, has produced and awesome number of young men who are a credit to the Franciscan tradition they grew up in. Matt is at peace. Coach Deane you were and still are a great influence on many of your former players

A Classic Siena Big Man. Played when Centers were Centers. He could bang with the best of them. RIP MG.

Coach Deane you were and still are a great influence on many of your former players Was talking with one of Matt's former teammates and roommates this morning. He reminded me of just how hard life has been for Matt over many years because of health issues. He feels that Matt is finally at peace, and is in a better place than he has been. Also told me that Mike has recently reached out to every player, manager and coach who was with him (Mike) in all of the time that Mike was at Siena. He is sharing contact information for all of those people with each of them so they will also be able to remain in contact with each other. Mike says that Doremus told him that he (Doremus) plans to return to the states soon, and promised Mike that he will finish his degree work at Siena. That will finally make Doremus immediately eligible for the Siena Hall of Fame, an honor he richly deserves. And, if he fulfills that promise, that will mean that every player who played for Mike, at any school, and who stayed in school for four years, will have earned a college degree, something that means a great deal to Mike.

Such a tribute to the family that Siena basketball is! I met Matt a few times in the bars in and around pearl st and he was a gem. RIP my friend.

That interview was an awesome trip down memory lane for so many of us - thanks for putting it up Tony. Mike Deane was a great coach but an even greater people person - kept you on your toes whenever around him - so many great and very funny memories...the Matt couldn't jump over a phone book is a classic...he loved all of his players and is so proud of all they achieved on and off the court
