Not a complete shock given his health concerns, but damn.

That's unfortunate. He was probably afraid of Carm ;-)

Big loss for the MAAC and Iona. I wish him well.
Pitino surfacing again 🤦‍♂️ not sure there’s a program in the country that will touch him but I guess you never know... rumor is boosters have reached out.

Wish him the best. Hopefully he can recover to be impactful on the program in some way. It’s not easy to step away from something you love.

Not surprising it's been obvious for a while. Delusional Iona fans thought he was coming back. Gals will probably make a run at pitino, and if that falls through which it probably will, fall back will be that grease ball Grasso. He can recruit I'm not sold out his coaching ability. At any rate good luck to Iona, they're going to need it there's a new sheriff in town

I think Pitino to Iona is a worse idea than when Pitino was rumored for the Siena job. As with Siena, Pitino would be there a couple of years, get some good talent then move on and players will follow. At that point, you are rebuilding again. You then are pinning your hopes that another coach you want is available or desires to have the job. Why put yourself in that position a couple of years from now when you can go find a good longer-term hire now? Unless 1) the goal is to win an NCAA tournament game at all costs or 2) there isn't anyone you want that you can get or is available, so just roll the dice on Pitino and see things land in a couple of years and rebuild. Neither option is that good. I think they need to look outside of Grasso and Pitino. Grasso has not impressed at Bryant yet and looks like he's a better recruiter and assistant than a head coach. The Grasso/Cluess team was good because Grasso could recruit talent with baggage, but Cluess could keep it under control enough to win and not be a problem. The whole was greater than the sum of its parts. I think Grasso could be a disaster. Shaheen Holloway makes no sense (saw this rumored too). Why would he leave a program he built to a 2nd place MAAC team that is young and with a couple more good years he can move up? I can't see him giving that up for a rebuild project at the same level.

No one should be called Greeseball. It’s an ethnic slur that I don’t think Toney intended

Another season ends, and more RP rumors. Pitino had legs at Siena too, it didn’t happen, Pitino to Rhode Island had legs, it didn’t happen. He’s been mentioned with Alabama. UCLA, St. John’s, UNLV & now Iona and GCU (there may be others as spots open). He was hoping Cooley would go to Michigan so he could get a shot at returning to Providence. See a pattern? Pitino is chomping at the bit to take any job, but for a lot of programs he’s damaged goods.
I know a show-cause was never pinned to Pitino but will he be targeted by the NCAA along with a new program that makes the hire?
He may wind up at some program sooner than later or even down the road, but he’s definitely carrying a $hit-ton of baggage. There’s always going to be an element of high risk/high reward with pulling the Pitino trigger.

As much as I dislike Iona, I always respected Cluess coaching ability. I hope he is able to overcome the health issues that forced him to step down from a job he seemed to love. I think Pitino is very much in play- he has been away from college hoops for a few years now and people move on quickly. I don’t think it’s a good idea from the schools perspective as his level of commitment will be only until he gets a bettter offer.

This PC-victim creating, virtue signaling, stuff doesn’t help anyone. Again, not offended and we don’t need you to “protect” us. Equality comes when everyone can be equally insulted regardless of background. We are all the same. We are all Americans.
