Love that he will have the opportunity to practice and gel with team early. He's got a bit of a skinny frame, so having access to the college-level weight program will be a great boost for his potential next year.
Unless he comes into practice clearly ready to be a major contributor, then I am all for having him red shirt and using this opportunity to get a head start on next year.

I'm pretty confident that Carpenter becomes one of our top 5 players as soon as he steps on campus but he'd be lost in the schemes.

I think he's so strong and athletic that he'd be a mismatch against the MAAC right now. He's too quick to be guarded by most bigs and too strong to be guarded by guards. You need a Camper type to match up with him and even he might struggle. The kid just put up 21 and 16 against a HS team with 2 D1 kids (one of whom is a 4-star) and an all-state football player who is going to Kentucky. Colin was the best player on the floor. I still think he can play 5 in the MAAC and his face-up game is only going to get better. Like I said, strength is the 1 qualifier for Golson I think. If he is just THAT strong...and he very well might be...that's where he increases his impact early. Anosike certainly got by on strength and athleticism in the MAAC. It's not like he had any actual skills. Although, Anosike also was 6-8 with a 7-3 1/2 foot. wingspan...and that's just different. So we'll see if he can get away with it. Golson does have a 7 foot wingspan supposedly so we'll see. He might be able to do 'Anosike type things'. Like Anosike, I haven't seen a lot of Golson blocking a lot of shots...so that's another issue as a center that could hurt us. Bundu was a lot like a shorter, less utilized Anosike as well...so it's really just another comparison of the same thing. Since JO left, Siena has been desperate for an interior defender. Even if Golson is solid like these 2 were, a case could still be made that he's better utilized in a platoon scenario with other bigs....where the compliment a guy that's more skilled (BK) or a big shotblocking center (TBD) etc.. Golson has grown an inch and put on some muscle since his 6'6, 220 junior year measurement that's been commonly listed. He's up to 6'7, 235 now and he's only 17. If he adds another inch or 2, he's going to be an unexpected steal I suspect. For perspective, I didn't reach my full 6'0 height until I turned 19. Hell, Manny Camper grew another inch at 20. Let's see what Golson is listed at when he arrives next year before we speculate as to where he'll fit in.

If we were sitting at 7-1 right now and looking like a team that could make some noise in the NCAA Tourney then I would be for suiting up Carpenter as soon as possible. But the reality is we are 3-5 and even if we make the NCAA Tourney we are going to have an extremely difficult first round opponent. I know after the long drought we are desperate to get back to the big dance but using up a year of Carpenter's eligibility now when 4 years from now he could be part of something much bigger would be a mistake. Now if it turns out that he's enrolling early cause he plans to graduate in 3.5 years and wouldn't be here any longer than that anyways then you've got nothing to lose by playing him. Making the NCAA tournament and winning the MAAC championship would be so big for this program even as a 16 seed in the second year of a rebuild (first year of a new HC). If Carpenter can play (which I highly doubt) this year bring him on!!

I doubt the plan would call for him to play this season if he enrolls.

Yes. That’s good to get him a little head start. Don’t think I’d want him to play anyway. If nothing else, that would mean he wouldn’t be able to play a senior semester (or would this take up a FULL year?). Regardless. Glad he’s here with the team!

More Golson highlights to salivate over: http://instagram.com/p/B7Mi3ZohalI I think he is going to be a stud for us. Maybe not year one, but definitely in the future. Love the tenacity and energy he plays with!

Looking forward to hearing reports on how Aidan is adjusting to D1 ball. Big advantage getting him in now

This is so great...great head start on next year. I would assume his time would be almost exclusively on the "scout" team since they wouldn't want to spend time integrating him into this year's on the floor group. Not sure how that would work.

Didn’t realize that Bennett’s brother Jordan is going to Drake, where he’ll be playing with former Saint Roman Penn. Small world. 😇
