Guys do slip through the cracks. But also: He played on one of the five best HS teams in America, for a coach who can call pretty much any D1 program and get his phone call answered. He has gotten offers at different times from schools at every level of Division 1 — including a WCC offer the same day we offered back in January. Those offers seemingly vanished. He played AAU this spring on one of the three major circuits, at a time when virtually everyone needed bigs and few were available. Yet he didn’t earn any new offers and eventually surfaces at one of the worst programs in D1. Maybe everyone is missing out! And maybe it would have been worth taking the flier on him. But if we missed out, we’re far from the only ones. It’s not like this kid is an unknown. Beta is an example of why Carm soured on the portal. He'll probably be in and out of there after one season because he clearly thought he could do better. I like the guy they got as the backup 5. We wanted size - well, he's huge. Assuming he's healthy after 2 years away from the game, he's shown he can provide what is needed in his collegiate experience so far. Sure Beya isn’t without risk BUT the guy we have hasn’t played ball in over two years. Toss him in the roll of the dice, high risk pool category. Unfortunately kids transferring out today is just the nature of the game. Don’t like it, take better advantage of the NIL. Fran worked wonders having a “system” in place to generate $upport. As far as recruiting US HS/prep/transfers goes, one girl dumps you, you don’t go celibate. Sorry but when Rogers left Carm acted like a scorned teenager with his portal comments. Kids you’re recruiting and their handlers don’t want to hear that kind of BS from a prospective coach. Unfortunately we’re in an era of roster turnover. I’d much rather bring in better talent even it’s for 1 or 2 seasons than a bunch of guys who stick around for 4 that are fair to middling. We took a lot of “TBD & gambles” with the ‘22 class. Hopefully it all works out.

The mid major "great" teams will never be the same with the current transfer rules still in place. Coaches at our level need to adjust, and adopt the food chain theory. Actively recruit the best small school (D-2, D-3, NAIA & JC) that have proven themselves already. The kids that excel at our level are already hearing from the P5 level with open arms. We need to have the same mentality with the top 5% of the levels below us.
Not saying to build a team solely on that philosophy, but rather to fill holes with proven, experienced, hungry players. Put them with the loyal kids that you gave a chance to, and are actually content with this level. Along with the occasional higher D-1 kid that cant get minutes, and would be GRATEFUL to be at a school like Siena.
I think Carm was frustrated with the portal, and the foreign path is a version of "happy for the chance" recruiting. The kids we signed from overseas aren't tainted with the portal/NIL life the American kids see. So I can see the reasoning, BUT at the end of the day, they need to be PLAYERS.
I hope they prove Carm right.

Carm will get more leeway than other coaches were afforded, local guy, Siena player and all. He’s here for a good long time unless he gets a higher calling.

Former darling of this board Amarri Tice playing right now against Texas A&M for Wofford... I check his stats, he's averaging 3.8 points on 28% shooting from the field. Meanwhile, fellow darling Jerome Beya, who ended up at Tennessee Tech, is averaging 7 minutes and 1.2 points per game.
Maybe our coaching staff knows a little more than they get credit for...

Tice does start for a very good mid-major. Def struggling with his shooting, but rebounding very well. I'd take him back in a second I dont know anything about Beya except he's big, and getting treated like most freshman bigs once they get to college.

My point is simply that they aren’t can’t miss recruits… Eley and Gribben producing just as well if not better as those two guys

Im happy with Eley and Gribben, like most. Do I think a relationship with the City Rocks is important? Absolutely. So kids like Beagle, Tice and Rumpel are a bigger priority in my opinion. Is it realistic to get all of them? Of course not, but its nice to think so

Of course not, but its nice to think so I agree HJ................Tice could still help if we had him and should UA situation implodes (coach situation) then Beagle is back in play for us............not a Rumpel fan, at least from what I saw he was getting abused by McCollum, perhaps as guard depth but not as a starter..............

Now that Beagle has played CBB and been productive, he’ll go higher than us in the portal… which may well happen whether or not DK hangs on at Albany

I must have missed Rumpel getting abused by JM? I know he fouled him once, but I think those FT's were the only points he scored on him. He only gets 7-8 minutes a game as a freshman. Is he better than JM? Obviously not (who is?) But as a back-up and a kid that could easily play alongside JM, Id always take a City Rock from a Central NY community.

So I am kind of in the middle on this debate, I like local kids but don’t necessarily think the should be prioritized over other options unless they are a better fit. I also don’t think much time should spent on them if Siena is their safety school. Truth is, it’s Carm’s livelihood … he has to play with the guys he brings in. That said, Rumpel was playing his 5th game total as he redshirted last year. Looks to be to be a strong physical guard who plays with attitude. Perhaps a more athletic Kyle Downey type.

Yeah, Ive seen Rumpel in several AAU games with the City Rocks and am a big fan. He's got a great handle and gets to the rim, or creates, when his team runs. Bonnie fans on their board want him to get more minutes and push the ball. Quack is right, he's a physical guard with great hops. He only played 7 min last the other night, but I guess he's the reason JM got 23 points? I only saw 2 FT's but.....and as far as "staying in front of" JM, maybe im not seeing it right, but I'd say JM uses Stormo high screen most of the time to create.
