Over the years, I’ve attended a lot (a lot!) of basketball team practices. I enjoy watching player development over the time they’re at Siena. I enjoy watching the team prepare to play other teams. I enjoy getting “closer” to everyone involved with the program, and getting to know them more personally. And that has always included team managers just as much as anyone else associated with the program. Though he’s been at Siena for just a year and a half, Thomas Small (Smalls) has been one of my favorites. I’ve thought of him as a terrific young man. I’ve told him that I expect him to be a governor some day.
But I didn’t have any idea.....none......of the illness he deals with day in and day out. Watching the video, I have more admiration and respect for him than ever. It saddened me deeply to hear him say that there have been times when he didn’t want to go on with his life. Thank God, he has persevered through that. I will pray and hope that he can continue to win that battle.
Thank you for posting this, DD. God bless Smalls and the millions of others who have to live with any type of mental illness. It could be any one of us.
