Many know I'm not a great fan of officials ((actually only dislike crooked or incompetent ones). Last night watching Astros/Yankees and Syracuse/Clemson games made me wonder why officials are paid big bucks. So much unnecessary delay occurred in these games. These are just two examples: On the play at the plate the home plate umpire had a clear close up view of the tag. The video replay shown on T V was not a good view in comparison. Yet the viewer is treated to a several minute delay before the out call is confirmed. In the football game several minutes are wasted on the spot of a ball for a first down. For 150 years officiating crews using sticks and chains have been able to make the determination. If technology is needed make the unofficial yellow line official. I found the only favoritism in the Syracuse game to be found on the part of the announcing crew who should have been wearing Clemson jerseys. Don't even get me going on whether a catch is a catch. Leaving games up to human real time judgements would make them much more watchable.

I agree, and basketball is no different. I was a fan of video replays before as I too do not “trust” officials as much as I probably should, but it’s getting out of hand. Put a time limit on it or something. But wow what a difference a solid coach makes, didn’t take long to turn Syracuse around haha

Oh and I thought that one announcer was going to cry at the end when his buddy finally told him all Syracuse had to do was kneel to win.

I don't disagree with your basic premise, and I'm sure things can be done to improve the process, but one thing video replay has done is to spare us the infantile behavior of guys like Billy Martin, Lou Pinella, Earl Weaver, etc.
