Not a huge JP fan but not a huge hater either.
I do know we could do much better for a new young HC, but sometimes patience(see Monmouth) and stability(see Gonzaga) is the best thing for long term growth.
"If" JP did improve, and get better at his craft, where better recruiting and game time coaching led to more wins and championships and post season berths, he probably at this stage of his life and coaching career and age and level of success to date, would make him a Siena lifer.
I know most of you are getting sick to your stomach right now
But it could play out that way.
Stability is huge in the recruiting world.
Yes, he has not produced a MAAC Championship or NCAA or NIT bid but he has not killed this program either.
For the most part he trys to play up tempo ball that is entertaining.
He may be well behind McCaffrey and Hewitt and Deane, but he is light years ahead of Mitch ball and Lanier and Beyer as well.
I think the real and most pressing issue lies more with JD and the current administration than it does with JP.
Everyone including coach should be accountable but the vision must come from the AD and President.
We need more vision and action at the top than we do a new coach right now.
We need to see something from Siena that tells us they are serious about the health of this program.
We need a sacrificial lamb right now.
I would say keep JP and get rid of JD and do it right now this week, like tomorrow with the official end to the college basketball season.
They (JP & JD)don't have to go out together.
It would save the school money by keeping JP, at least for this year.
It will probably help in us being able to keep Nico.
It would give the fan base something to have faith in.
To see that the President and current administration realizes that the college is at a very important crossroads in their MB Program right now.
It would put JP on notice that there's a new boss in town and you have a year to either sink or swim with the new guy.
It would help energize the fan base.
Obviously JD has his eye on bigger things himself or he would not have been interviewing for the St. Johns job.
So must you as a college.
Apathy is the worst thing that can happen to a program, and right now with the local casual basketball fan, we are well beyond being below that line to being relavent locally to them, much less beyond the Capital Region.
Not many people outside the core group of 4/5k fans, care about Siena Basketball any longer. My guess is that their Time Warner ratings have also gone down. This would be an indicator of such apathy.
When the current fan base of 60 (+) aged fans(for which there are many) is not replaced by younger alumni, and the local casual fan no longer has pride in its local college's success any longer, Siena will soon drop to even greater depths.
Listen up Siena.
The people on this board are your die hards.
We are the people who really care about you.
We need to see someone go.
The pulse of the program is at serious risk right now.
JD may be a nice guy but his comfort level just has not pushed him to do anything to provide results for many years.
You have to fire JD.
You have to get a new young well connected aspiring associate AD or SID from a Power Conference School and make him your AD, and you need to do it right now.
You have to get a guy who is looking to put something on his resume that will get him a Power Conference School AD job.
Remember, the only common thread for the last 4 Mens Basketball Coaches and past 17 years, with only one successful 5 yr. stint to date, is JD as your AD.
Make the decision. He will be fine. He will survive a firing, but your program may not if you dont act now.
It's time for new blood at the top.
Fire JD.
