For those wondering if Nico Clareth is coming back...Jimmy Patsos just told me: "Nico is very happy here. He is our new captain."
Let's hope Nico is healthy and focused when he is he has first team all-MAAC potential. Now JP needs to get some more talent around him to contend next season!
Right now I see a line-up of Smithen, Horn, Nico, Degnan and Friday - need more upgrades.

Good News. Never thought Nico would leave. Staying at Siena is in his best interest and that of the team's too. If he stays healthy and works hard in the off season.... look out... next year could prove to be better than most on here are expecting.

Let's hope he gets healthy. As great as his 3 pt shooting was against Monmouth his best asset is slashing.

I'm not going to get too excited until I see something from Nico that says he is coming back. Just a comment from Patsos that he's named Nico captain doesn't really mean anything.

I'm going to be the first to say it: We might be better off going small next year.
We really don't know what we have in the frontcourt.

Penn 6'0, Smithen 6'2, Shivers 6'4, Nico 6'4, ? I like Friday and have heard good stuff on Degnan. Will be interesting to see what jumps the sophomores-to-be can make.

Without JO and Brett, I would like to see a team that plays uptempo... presses and runs
I like Shivers but I don't like him as a starter. I like him as a 6th man role guy. Doesn't score enough 18mpg/4ppg he's really going to have to step it up in the scoring department.
We're going to need scoring and right now I have no idea where it's going to come from....

Thinking about your "going small" recommendation and our concerns re recruiting, could the trip to Nam actually be a recruiting trip - lots of small people whose parents watched GI's playing hoop on base...?

Nico is the only proven scorer next year. Between Quis, Lavon, JO and Brett we'll be 40-60 points a game.
My concern is that the lowered expectation means Jimmy gets a pass. I understand why next year could be <.500 but getting to .500 shouldn't be a spectacular achievement in year 5 of a coaching stint.

I understand why next year could be <.500 but getting to .500 shouldn't be a spectacular achievement in year 5 of a coaching stint. Drunken monkies score 60 ppg at this level. It's just a matter of how efficiently they do it. Richard is a decent scorer/shooter but not a true PG nor a great defender. Smithen is not a great scorer/shooter and not a true PG but is a great defender. Shivers does a little bit of everything but isn't overly great at anything. Clareth is a talent but is all over the place offensively. Camper may be Nico-ish athletically and with his shooting ability. Horn may end up being an important piece as a ballhandler and scorer, but may struggle on D. Next year, to me, seems like it's mostly in Roman Penn's hands. On paper, he is the one kid who may be an all-around PG. He seems like he can handle, distribute, score, and shoot. If not him, then we could be looking at a team of combo's with no real floor leader.

Siena needs another impact player or 2 for sure. There's pieces and role players but it's tough to tell what they will develop into at this point.
Need 2 of guys like Nash, Minaya, and Hitchon.
Minaya (if he's really 6-7) could allow Siena to go small much more effectively...which could be incredibly important for next year.
Nash could maybe be that all-around big athletic SG we've longed for since Kenny Hasbrouck left.
Hitchon could give us another chance for a decent PF ...knowing that Oduro has kind of underperformed.
If Siena gets at least 2 of these, they have a chance to be top 5. I would love to have all 3 and I might go with an almost all frosh lineup.

Don't shoot the messenger but everyone knows JP rarely and I mean rarely wins a recruiting battle. Everyone knows JP is done at Siena regardless of whether its this year or next. Everyone knows all 17-18 scholarships are accounted for unless someone leaves and everyone knows that about 1/2 of JPs recruits never finish their 4 years at the school where JP recruited them. Thus don't get your hopes up for any of these recruits.
