Thanks for sharing this. It's all about what is wrong in professional sports. Greenblood - more often than not you and I are on the same page ... this is not one of those times. A professional franchise is in the business of making money & winning. It is the sports F A N S and advertisers who have proven again and again that although they will be critical of such actions they'll still fork over their $$$ for a winner on the field of play.... Hiring guys like this will stop in its tracks as soon as fans & advertisers stop allowing it.

@ nolesaint - no I agree about the winning part, what I think is sad is that professional athlete's salaries are out of control compared to surgeons and say, teachers. Not to mention they are more highly regarded as 'heroes' than the oncologist that saves the life of a child with leukemia. The good news is that there are many athletes who give so much back. It's just my periodic disappointment with the way society has gone I guess.

Your comments, while I'm sure are well intentioned, are naive and disturbing. So I guess the pub owner who runs a successful business shouldn't make more than the oncologist or the school teacher? Really? What about the home builder who makes millions? Is he overpaid? This teacher crap is getting old. If you work in the public sector and you don't think you get paid enough, get a job in the private sector or start your own business.

Wow, I work in the PRIVATE SECTOR and am an OWNER OF TWO BUSINESSES. I work very hard and get paid very well for what I do, for the record. It also required 8 years of education, and I can be disbarred by the FDA if I commit a crime, unlike several athletes who are over idolized and over paid to 'win' at all costs. That was my point. Didn't mean to put a bee in your underwear.

Rat, GB is one of the most rational thinkers on this board and anything but naive - she is in healthcare and her opinions are welcome and usually looked for. Your reach into Nazi Germany to make your point, which does not address the points she made, is low and would immediately turn off any reader willing to see what you have to say. Your post is disturbing. Yes, our society is screwed up - we owe a lot of it to ourselves but that doesn't change the total picture of which we individuals have little, if any, control.

Frankly I think it is the naive point of view to think that athletes are actually worth their services. In reality, it is the highly eccentric and egotistical multi-billionaire owners and executive CEOs of major corporations that control sports and ultimately what the athletes are paid, not the fans. In the race for the top desire to "win at all costs" these controllers of wealth create millionaires out of mostly average players who in turn get richer as spokespersons for products. Sure, we as fans enable them but frankly we have little to no control... we can watch live, on tv, or not at all and we still are charged no matter what because this is what the owners and the executives want to spend their considerable money and time on. So, in the absence of any formalized structure in a free market society, instead of a cure for cancer we have world class sports. There is nothing that can really be done about this but it is a little naive to think that these multi-billionaires have society's best interests at heart or that anyone has equal access to the lifestyle that these very few but highly powerful individuals have achieved.
