MP. let's try this... yesterday in the northern NYC 'burbs it was 43 at 12:00 today it was 45.. extrapolating (as it appears you are buying into) we will all be burnt toast by September.. The point being, if you measure over a short enough distance you can make a case for your arguement..now explain the glacier.. can you? can any GW's? I'll save you the effort... even in 2014 no one knows... but heck, we suddenly have all the answers to a MINOR increase in temperature the past 30 years. Just making a wild ass guess but if I were you I'd make sure I wore my goalie's mask next time you are in goal. Your example demonstrates you are saving too many slap shots using just your head. OBTW, the argument is over - I just looked at the temperature outside and now I agree, the globe is cooling - it's come down 2 degrees in the last hour. Simple! I'm going to write an article for Scientific American - of course I will give you credit for the new "scientific method"! Much easier to only believe what you want when you can only measure both the starting point and the current end point. Funny, I think the stupid scientists compare the average temperature for a month, say September, in the same location with prior years that have accumulated data. Your suggestion is much simpler and depending on when a given person decides to start and stop measurements you can conclude anything you want. Nice! Write it up-you might be in the running for next year's Nobel Prize.

Gorvy, I am not saying it is or isn't right, just that we are way too quick to come to definitive conclusions. Look, I am not a dummy, I even have a graduate degree from that place on the east side of the Hudson. I have spent a fair amount of time trying to reconcile the latest prognostications with history. I welcome anyone who can explain the last "Ice age" where ocean levels are calculated to have fallen 350 feet, not rising a few inches, yes feet. I bring up the ozone hole because the shrill press made a big deal of it, what have you heard about it in the past 3 or 4 years? Zippo.. why? Am I making any sense? A graduate degree from Rippel Pippel U - WOW. Now I understand you completely. I worked in a research lab with a Rippel Pippel U PhD chemist until he decided to clean out a lab's chemical storage closet and poured a quart jar of sodium in a sink at the end of a lab bench - Nice job. He was obviously way too well educated for us and was fired after his burns and cuts healed. Your logic seems to come from a similar training background. He didn't put the sodium in the jar so how could he tell what it was! I kid you not!

Don't you wish you had one? Nope, not in the least. My Siena degree had me better prepared for my career.

Interesting take on the issue. ..., I especially found his mammography example craftily written. Took issue with "free" mammograms in all policies - ... I'm always offering to provide my wife with a free Breast exam; she always takes exception with me too.

Here is some info on temperature measurements and measured warming of the planet that I requested late last week: "Sorry it took a while to get back, been very busy recently. Let me start by saying that as a Meteorologist – I am NOT a global warming expert. My focus is more on “daily weather” for a given area, so climate studies on a global scale aren’t my exact expertise. That said, I do know a bit about it, so here goes. There are a lot of standards in place for properly recording temperature. For example it has to be recorded in the shade, be at least 3 feet off the ground, it has to be in a grassy area – NOT over pavement, a certain distance away from buildings and bodies of water, etc etc. The influence of human activity in cities and decreased vegetation that your friend (and many skeptics) point to, IS a real thing in meteorology, known as “The Urban Heat Island” effect. However, aside from the careful manner in which temperatures are measured to reduce those influences…. Those that point to Urban Heat Island as an explanation for rising temperatures, often neglect a few things; Temperatures outside of cities have also risen. If temperatures are also rising in rural areas (which they are) then the influence can’t be as simple as the Heat Island effect. More significant… Even the temperature gauges in the middle of the ocean have risen. Zero city influence there. Another thing about Urban Heat Island some people forget, is that rather than explain away Global Warming – it is actually a key argument FOR human made Global Warming. Human activity & deforestation are what cause cities to be warmer than the country side… so Urban Heat Island effect is concrete evidence that man made activity causes rising temperatures – pollution aside. Locally, we also follow the national, and international trend. Our “normal” temperatures are based on a 30 year average. Every ten years those numbers are adjusted. Both our daily, monthly, and yearly temperatures all had to be raised in 2011, because of how much warmer the ten year period from 2000-2010 was over the previous 2 decades. Here is the main hub for all of the archived climate information from the National Weather Service in Albany: www.nws.noaa.gov/climate/local_data.php?wfo=aly"

Sounds like the arguments made were not so silly after all. Just curious about the standards of measuring temps he referred to, how long have they been implemented or in use?

It appears to me that the climate is always in a state of flux. The question is how much and why. AGW folks are saying it is getting warmer and that it is due to man-made CO2 emissions.
I'm not sure. The models indicated a much greater impact than has been seen to-date. The models are off. We're close to 20 years in. NYS should have the climate of Bermuda by now and Jones Beach should be in Westchester. We were told that tropical storms would be more frequent and more severe. The last 2 years have been almost dead quiet from that perspective.
The fact that the results aren't what they were modeled doesn't mean it isn't happening but one should ask questions about the level of concern and the root cause. Is it CO2? Is it man-made? As Will Rodgers put it "It isn't what we don't know that gives us trouble, it's what we know that ain't so."
If the planet is warming and it is on the way to catastrophe, we should at least be making sure we're addressing the right problem. Unfortunately I don't think we are.

November 22,2015 Father-Jonathan Morris: Several people bemoaned to me that tonight's warm temps in NYC is Global Warming. Tonight in Chicago biggest snow storm since 1895.

I'm still waiting for MP's 10 page rebuttal! Can't take on Fr Whoever's logic! He's so analytical, there is an urban myth about the time he returned half a box of nails because the heads were on the wrong end! He's still struggling with the theory that ice, water and steam are all the same compound.
