I think the admin shit their pants when the St Rose news broke and now are terrified to be seen as wasting money on something silly like athletics. I really hope I'm wrong but I don't think basketball is a priority anymore, salvation and covering their asses for things that could look like a waste of money if the school goes under is all they care about. The cost of an $800K buyout isn't going to save Siena financially. In fact, I believe, that if they fire Carm, and hire a coach who brings them back to relavency (My recollection was that when Siena was "relevant" under Fran and achieving national recognition the college benifited with increased applications, enrollment and tuition $). The college will be much further ahead financially.

The college will be much further ahead financially. That may be true but it is still a huge IF that the next hire will bring them back anywhere close to where Fran did. And ultimately, I think it could be more about the optics than the reality. Maybe the best thing to save the school would be a great hire for the basketball program but the reality is that would not pay off until years down the road and the admin will have to deal with questions about that $800k until then and forever will be haunted by it if the school were to not make it that long. Every faculty member they lay off, any programs they cut, they will all be immediately compared in cost to the $800k they threw overboard for the basketball program. The only way to justify it is if a wealthy donor earmarks $800k that can only be used to buy out Carm's contract.
