Players can only be successful if they are deployed in ways they are able to succeed. Patsos had Fisher running around on the perimeter shooting 3's, chose not to redshirt him in favor of Brandwijk, destroying Willem's confidence and leaving Fisher in a position where he couldn't be successful since he wasn't in game shape. Once Siena had him do what he did in high school, he was good!
Degnan was played out of his natural PF position for 2 years at Fairfield and transferred because of it. JP brought him in and said he'd play the 4, then turned around and used him half the time as a 5 and half the time yelled at a cloud that he wasn't Brett Bisping. Once JC had him do what he did in high school, he was good!
Smithen was never a point guard. He was never a jump shooter. He wasn't in HS, wasn't at Richmond, wasn't at Siena. Once he was allowed to embrace being a defensive stopper and wasn't going to be pulled every 30 seconds when he didn't do what the coach wanted him to do, he became an aggressive driver when open who got fouled a lot and became perhaps the best defender in the MAAC.
Again, it's really not hard. Recruit players whose strengths fit into the strengths of your system, and use those players in a way that accentuates those strengths. That's what JC did. If you want to be a team that emphasizes playing two bigs, dominating the glass, and getting good looks in transition-- get athletic, speedy guards and bigs who are good rebounders who can shoot FT's. JP recruiting Sloan Seymour would have made absolutely no sense and he would suck beyond belief being told to crash the glass and toss it down low every time. If you want to be a team that spaces out and shoots 3's, recruiting an OD Anosike/Ryan Rossiter big man pairing is pretty illogical. And it works both ways-- if a coach has a group that doesn't fit what he does (JC had a bunch of slow bigs for a coach who wants to run and press) he has to be able to adapt to that.
For some reason, this is much more difficult for coaches to figure out than it feels like it should be.

Although I do think it is hard, it is why some coaches are great and others are “Sosos”

With Freshman Harris now added into the mix of Grad senior Burns, Juniors Friday and Camper, and Sophomores Seymour, Carey, and Pickett (and possibly Ratliff??).....
.....does our current 7 or 8 currently or in the future match up with Frans team make up of senior hasbrouck, juniors eubiles, franklin, and moore, sophomores rossiter and cj, and freshman od as part of our greatest 4 yr run in program history?
Different type of make up of players I know, but can they be just as successful or even better this year and over the next 4 yr span than those Siena icons were?

There’s a new HC and this main core will be in its first season on the court together. With that said outside of the ‘16-‘17 team this is the most talented team there’s been since Fran’s last year. Jalen could certainly wind up being the best player the program has seen but as far as a team, TBD

The 2016-17 team was senior led but had no bench whatsoever. Losing Oliver/Wormley/La Rose off the 15-16 was bigger that originally thought. That's what ultimately did them in in the MAAC championship game. Plus, Wright was playing like a POY when he got hurt and wasn't as good his senior year. This team is younger but on paper potentially much more talented 1 through 8. Coach Carm is an unknown as a first time HC - the HC coach from the 15-16/16-17 was a known mediocre coach.

I think it depends on Burns and Carey being monsters and Harris being ready to step right in as rookie of the year. If Burns and Carey both truly take as big a jump as many are talking and are top 10 players in the MAAC then look out, this team could be that good. That's still a big if though since we haven't seen it play out on the court. Other big difference is we only have one year of Burns and there is no clear cut stud taking over that position yet.

JP's in game coaching is what did them in...not their talent. It is too soon to start comparing this team to a Fran team before over half the roster has even played a game at Siena...some even a single D1 game. That's how you get roasted by fans of other schools.

The biggest luxury we have this year is that we are going to get to find out quick whether Carm can coach or not. If we had brought in a new coach and Pickett left along with Burns or Carey and some others then we would be back in total rebuild mode and need to give the coach 3 to 5 years to evaluate him. With the roster Carm has assembled the team should be ready to compete for a championship immediately and barring major injures the season will be a massive disappointment and raise major questions about Carm as a coach if the team finishes 5th or 6th in the MAAC.

Good post Scott, right on the mark. Carm certainly hasn’t shied away from expectations. No 5 year plan bullshit. In fact quite the opposite much like Fran he talks about competing for MAAC title every year, sustainable success etc, Carm is talking the talk, hopefully he can walk the walk. I mean if we won 22 games and lost to Iona in finals it wouldn’t be end of the world, but I think most Siena fans expect Siena to be pretty darn good this year, barring unforeseen injuries academic casualty’s etc, a 4 or 5th place finish would be disappointing to most Siena fans

I never compared this team to any of Fran’s teams just that IMO this is the most talented Siena since Fran’s teams. A couple of JP teams had talent as did Mitch’s first team but I don’t think we’ve had the amount of depth and athleticism this team has. This should be a top 3 at a minimum and win 20 games. Carm has to proven himself as a bench coach but so far he’s passing the other tests.

It’s going on 11 years, easy to forget just HOW GOOD those teams were. Impossible to compare at this point. Maybe an undefeated MAAC season would help make the comparison legit. Roast away.
