I think Pickett is an NBA role player at some point, but not quite ready this year. With another year of seasoning, maybe. After 4 years, most likely.
NBA teams are always looking for 2nd and 3rd unit PGs. They settle for guys who have major flaws to their games for those positions. Pickett does a bit of everything but nothing elite. He has upside in every statistical category and that's something that can't be discounted. It brings MAJOR value to a team as we know.
The question is how much money leaving early will guarantee him. If no team is willing to draft him due to athleticism, he should get his degree and try out like everyone else. Once he does, I think he'll make a team because he's just too damn smart on the basketball court.
But most teams won't give an early draft pick or big money to guys who they believe could be career 2nd unit type PGs. The NBA is all about finding the next superstar. Pickett's athleticism doesn't scream NBA superstar. Pickett's NBA value is probably more in that getting a steal of depth PG who will do all the little things with the 2nd or 3rd unit that help the team win.

Three years later, he might not be ready. He’s never played PG in his life until this year!! Now he’s going to face the best PGs in the world on a nightly basis? The Canisius game where Molson locked him up keeps coming up in my memory. Bigger, faster, stronger and a better athlete. Those attributes got Molson a full ride to the Big East now. Would a BE team take JP? Of course. I just don’t know how he’s do night in, night out against BCS level point guards. Get your degree. Do something special at Siena so the basketball world knows you for the right reasons, not because a HS kid saw your name on ESPN.

But, the kid has so much upside that in a year....who knows.

I'm sure Jalen even knows he's not ready right now. He basically has told Carm as much. This was always planned when JC was still here (his illness delayed it - wasn't a last minute change of heart liked the ESPN draft guy tweeted out). He is fully on board with coming back next year. His tweet year two with the Saints confirmed as much.
Let's see what he does next year with better players like Carey and Burns around him (plus some more additions - been too quiet!) plus Siena is going to play a few high-level teams I'm sure. And hopefully we get to the NCAAs (or least NIT) and he can make a run there.
Hopefully he's a four year guy...and he probably will be unless he has a monster year in 2019-2020 and someone guarantees him a first round pick (i.e. Kevin Huerter) next year. Nobody turns that down.

Everyone is probably correct that he needs more seasoning and development, The reasoning I have seen for bullish rankings of Pickett has been his ability to operate the PnR (Jalen was statistically the best pick and roll passer in the country as a freshman and turned Evan Fisher into the highest-scoring PnR big in the country). The argument would be that having that skill set alone is enough to be a MAJOR prospect, over a 5-10 PG who is fast as hell but not the same passer like a Harper from Auburn or just a scoring guard like Wright-Foreman or a guy who is a similarly good passer in Justin Robinson from VA Tech But is 3 years old and ceiling is low. Jalen is young and as has been said, is in his first year playing point guard, so he’s somewhat of a blank canvas with an elite ability to do the most important thing a PG can do in today’s NBA AND has major defensive upside.
I also think tightening up his handle will have major impacts on his entire offensive game. It will make his first step a lot quicker (he doesn’t get blown by on defense, so he isn’t slow). It will allow him to be more aggressive in the open floor. It will also allow him to get to the basket and get easier shots. That’s all with one improvement.
So yeah, I could see a team falling in love with that skillset and the idea of getting to develop the rest and take the gamble in the late 20s or the second round. I’d imagine he’ll be told by teams to go back to school, but it only takes one to love you and then things get interesting.

How does Pickett's declaring for the NBA draft affect recruiting. People today say one thing and make commitments they don't intend to stick to if a better offer comes along. Take JC for example. Pickett says he'll play next year but a potential recruit says " yeah, only if nothing better comes along." Look at our politicians; the people making marriage vows. We live in a country that a persons word means nothing.

dailygazette.com/article/2019/04/21/siena-s-pickett-declaring-for-nba-draftWow, this is impressive especially with whom the comparison is with. If Jalen can get his skills (and/or athleticism) anywhere close to NBA talent, I’m sure some team would want him because of his high basketball IQ. While, I’m definitely rooting for Jalen to make NBA (get drafted) my selfishness as a Siena fan hopes it doesn't happen until after he graduates Siena (after playing all four years here). CR’s coach: “Jalen Pickett is the highest-IQ player we’ve ever had with the City Rocks, and there’s a big gap from him down to No. 2 with Kevin Huerter,” Hart said at the time, favorably referencing Pickett to the Shenendehowa graduate who recently completed his rookie season with the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. “What’s between Jalen’s ears is NBA all-star.” Coach Carm: “Obviously, he has my blessing. I believe in the kid to the end,” Maciariello said. “You want your players to realize their dreams. I hope he plays well, that his stock improves and that all the NBA teams love him.”

I want Jalen to be successful, but he should keep quiet about the team if he has no intention of coming back if something better comes along. He should say that up front. You don't say I'll be looking forward to next year when there is a possibility that there will be no next year. That is honesty.

This isn't jumping to St John's or George Washington, this is the NB fricking A. If he can get a guarantee he will be drafted he should go for it. Without that guarantee he will be back at Siena. There is absolutely no evidence that there is no possibility of him being at Siena next year. Not sure why people are having such a hard time understanding this. This is the new normal in college basketball, if you are on the radar of NBA teams you would be doing yourself a disservice to not take the opportunity to declare for the draft and find out what teams think you need to work on.

Yeah I won't hold that tweet against him. It was to get the poachers off his back. BTW- He was never transferring. It's about getting to the pros. I just hope if he leaves it's a good situation and not wasting away in the G-league.

Sorry MTS, Pickett just announced, according to Michael Kelly, he’s staying in the draft even if he’s a 2nd round pick. Go get a PG Carm, the league has cometh and taken away!

No guarantees there, and no 3rd round.
