IF it’s a million dollar buyout, Cluess is the coach tonight. After years of futility, last thing St Johns wants to look is too cheap to buy out a mid-major coach’s contract. So to save face it’s a Duke assistant and a guy that lucky one year from Chicago?! They know exactly who Cluess is, and what he’s accomplished. He played there, and I think his brothers did too., or at least attended the college. I’m sure Mullin is owed plenty so money is def an issue here as you see by the list of “candidates.”

St. john’s board of Trustees meets tomorrow (Saturday 4/13) at previously scheduled retreat.
Expect issue of buy out to get settled at retreat and announcement on Monday.

To me, it's an indication of how far St. John's has fallen if Cluess gets this job. If they were really interested in revitalizing the program, they would do a splashy hire with a known commodity, like Pitino (Sr. or Jr.). At best, Cluess continues the so-so path that Mullen had them on.
That said, it doesn't hurt Siena at all if Cluess leaves Iona. We can make noise about how sweet it would be to dethrone him, but Iona's replacing him with an unproven coach bodes well for us.
GO SAINTS!!

Moser in the mix. Good coach but Cluess is better. Saint John's better hire the NYC guy.

Wont pay Ionas ridiculous buyout Cluess might get the job, but I still dont think they pay Ionas 2.5 million buyout.

Paul Hewitt at Saint John's? What is going on with this hire? That's only AAU coaches in the metro area that want him to get the job. Cluess makes too much sense for St. John's not to hire him and the AD is the one pushing for Cluess

Cluess might get the job, but I still dont think they pay Ionas 2.5 million buyout. NY Post Cluess’ buyout, believed to in the $2 million to $3 million range, was seen as an impediment by certain university higher-ups, according to sources. Looking like Iona’s close to locking Cluess up for a second time. It’s Hofstra all over again. Porter Moses makes no sense he’s a Midwest guy. Not sure he’ll take the gig. What a mess.

Maybe MAAC basketball fans from all schools could start a go fund me account to help the johnnies cover the buyout. Cluess gone would be bad and good all at the same time for the conference.

Sounds like Moser is the favorite. I had this "debated" with the Iona fans and they didn't like it but there's a lot of data to back it up. How does Cluess really help the MAAC? Iona has done essentially NOTHING outside of the league. We all know about their postseason struggles but they're non-conference record of late stinks - 18-25 the past four years (Siena is 19-27 in that same time). Someone is going to win the league so the MAAC will always get the NCAA share. Cluess is great for Iona...and in turn is tough to defeat for the league. But what has his presence done for the league really? I think it's more of an indication that he's feasted on bad/average MAAC coaches. He's a very good coach and give him credit for that but if he leaves the league isn't going to suffer.

As with all contracts, there might be room for negotiating. If Cluess wants out of Iona and Iona forced him to honor the contract - does Iona want a potential disgruntled employee coaching?
If Iona is willing to accept a reduced buyout ($1-$1.5M) they still receive “fair” compensation and can hire someone who actually wants to be there and “tries” to do a good job.
The “ball is in Iona’s court” and they can choose to move on with a new coach who wants the opportunity or force their current one to stay when maybe he doesn’t want to now.
