I’ve heard Cluess and Bobby Hurley are being strongly considered.

Same rumors circulating on the FU Board. I think Cluess has a real shot.
Not sure Hurley would want the job unless he really wants to get back east immediately.

According to Zack Braziller of NY Post, Cluess does not have a good relationship with Lou Carnesecca/St John’s, and also has a prohibitive buy out.

I know Lou was the coach during the golden years of St John’s, but why does every hire need his stamp of approval. I know he’s a good man who has done a lot for the school but I’d be pissed if I was a real fan or an alumnus.

If Cluess is ultimately the choice he'd be a Band-Aid. I don't think he has the chops to compete in the Big East, any more than Mullen did. The big mistake was losing a top tier coach like Lavin.

I’d be surprised if St John’s hires Cluess. St John’s will do what they always do, look for the “splashy” name. They will pursue Hurly, Pitino etc, if all the name guys turn down St John’s then Cluess could end up a serious candidate

And should a 94 year old guy who hasn't coached in over 25 years be a big influence on this kind of decision. I find it hard to believe there is much to that.

Most major decisions on the Hoops program are bounced off of him and he has some major buy in. Is he running the program? No. Does he have influence? 100%.

Obviously not but it happens all the time especially in the small privat schools and universities. Look no further than Siena. No fan of D Arg, yes he did a lot but time to move on IMO. That being said ho much influence did he have to take he hiding coaches from non sport over lints and associates of the school. Quite a bit I suspect.

I believe it is a two way street. When Cluess transferred from St John’s, he parted on bad terms between he and Carnesecca and a grudge has been held on both sides. I believe it is Cluess’ choice not to coach at St John, as much as it is Carnesecca’ choice. Until someone moves to mediate a resolution to their grudge (or Carnesecca’s association/influence with St John’s is desolved; which won’t happen) Cluess will not accept an offer to coach at St John’s.

Iona fans are so delusional - they think SJU will have to pay Iona the remaining of Cluess contract.
He's been there for 9 years. I doubt his buyout is more than 500K - which is peanuts for the Johnnies.
