...watching #1 Tennessee play a tough league, and in-state game @ Vandy and see Lanier on the bench. I really hope he gets another shot at running his own program. I know I wouldn’t want him in the MAAC anytime soon! I’m sure he knows he’s need a real good X & O’s guy If this opportunity ever came up again. I’m one of the few that thought he did a pretty good job here (NCAA and NIT trip).

I liked (and like) the guy. An outstanding recruiter and seemed to be a pretty good role model for the players he coached. That said, I think he was in over his head as a head coach. Maybe he's learned by now. As hoopjunkie said, maybe he'll do better next time. Meanwhile, it's obvious that Rick Barnes thinks a lot of him.

Scary!

Doesnt he make like $500K now? I would think as Top assistant on top team he would go to at least a bigger mid major that could pay him

Lanier was bad. But he could recruit like a SOB,( worked hard at recruiting too) he struggled balancing his classes and couldn't coach his way out of paper bag . I dont remember any coach who was fired at mid major that came back and was successful. Do remember a few that tried it and they all flamed out. And HJ if you thought Lanier did a good job with losing seasons 3 of the 4 years here, then no wonder why you like So-so Jimbo. I agree with Gorvy bring him on at UA or Iona, I'd laugh my ass off
Maybe you guys can remember more but off the top of my head I can only remember 3 head coaches that were fired by mid major and got another job- 2 of the 3 got promoted when head coach died.
Jim Crews fired at Army, was on Majerus staff, and when Rick died Crews was promoted to head coach. He lasted 4 seasons and was fired after two straight 11-21 seasons – he flamed out as he ran out of Majerus players. Dino Gaudio was promoted to head coach at Wake after Prosser died and much like Crews Dino flamed out after a few years and was fired at Wake. And of course Siena fans are familiar what happened to Mitch who has distinction of being program wrecker at two MAAC schools
Anyone remember any other guys fired at mid major level that got another head coaching gig?

Tony, go ask all the MAAC programs if they’d take a NCAA and NIT (the real one) in 4 years. How many say no? Iona and Manhattan, that’s it. That guy went to Iona with the way he recruits and their acceptance rate, they’d dominate the conference.

There may be more than 3 I listed, but dont think it happens often. I can see the presser announcing him a new coach somewhere- had losing seasons 3 of his 4 years as coach- final year was a 6 win season- the AD would be run out of town. No way a high level mid major takes a chance on him.. maybe a NEC team, but it's hard to come back once a mid major fires you ANd BTW I wouldn't take Lanier back any more than I'd take Beyer, Mitch or Jimbo-- anyone of those 4 could go to UA or Iona and I'd laugh

Two of our guys did (Mitch and Deane). Lanier was what 32 when he got the Siena job? I'm sure he's learned a little since then, and his recruiting is unreal....as evidenced with Tennessee being #1. Problem with guys like him is a MM cant afford a guy like him. He makes more as an assistant than any HC in the MAAC probably. So the question is flawed.

Bring it on,I’d love to see that happen. Or better yet ualbany. I didn't know we were hiring...thanks. LOL UA is a house of winners (and Gattuso but we won't talk about that)...look at UA coaching ranks. Why would we hire this loser or any other loser you've run off. We had a front court seat to your destruction. A decade of losing and counting will drive you mad it appears judging by your and Tony's posting. LOL

Hey, I like and support all the Siena coaches while they’re at Siena. I even support most of them after they move on but it still irks me that Lanier gets credit for the 4 MAAC tourney games in a row and NCAA victory when I learned after the fact the players decided to win/play in their own. Yes he could recruit )didn’t necessarily recruit all the players from that winning team) but really shouldn’t get credit for those victories if he wasn’t actively coaching the team during those games.
