Previously I thought it would be a waste for Sammy to come back, now with the potential for postseason play it makes a lot more sense. If the school is taking the N tournament or bust approach then maybe you don't bring Sammy back. But if the school is ready to commit to putting financial resources towards making sure the team has a postseason this year then you have to strongly consider it. His minutes could be critical in A) being more competitive in a NCAA or NIT game and B) making a run in the CIT or CBI.

His return would certainly give Fisher a break from logging excessive minutes, it all depends on Christian's and Friday's plans. Also I don't know the medical redshirt rules and how many games would be allowed. Friday has already played 9 games if that is over the limit and an appeal would be necessary to get another year, we all know how the NCAA considers appeals of mid majors. If another week is needed to evaluate and additional time is needed to get into game condition there is not much of the season left. Years ago it worked out well for Fairfield to bring Shannon Bowman back with about 10 days left in the season. He was their star player who went down early in the year and his comeback led them to the tournament championship and NCAA bid. I'm sure Christian and Friday will make the right decision when the time comes.

The limit on games played in a season to still be eligible for a medical redshirt is 30% of your team's games or three, whichever is larger. Siena is scheduled to play 31 games this year, so Sammy could play no more than 9 games. The injury also has to be "season ending".
So, if Sammy doesn't come back to play this year, he's eligible for the medical redshirt. If he comes back at all - even for one game - the year of eligibility counts.
I'm sure the medical and coaching staffs will speak with Sammy and make a decision that's in his best interests.

Sammy having been on crutches for 6-8 weeks probably doesn’t bode well for his physical fitness even if he is healthy... probably best to keep him on the bench this year and protect him, then let him keep the year and still have 2 years of eligibility... he could grad transfer after next year if he wants then as well.

JMO but at this point I think Sammy will be redshirting regardless of where the team is in the standings

The decision point has to be centered on whether he is still in recovery, not the standings.

The decision point has to be centered on whether he is still in recovery, not the standings. Agree with Gorvy. Also, the decision point should be whether or not he wants to burn a year of eligibility to come back for very few games now, or be able to contribute and possibly get a Master's degree down the road. I vote NO.

Sammy gets his 4 years no matter what right now, but JC will have the thought of a scholarship for the fifth year.

Right; that 5th year does not have to be at Siena- but I have the ultimate confidence that JC will confer with Sammy and his family and do what is best for Sammy, the STUDENT ATHLETE.

Nothing to do with recruiting, he could always move on, which I would if put in that situation by JC. We all like Sammy, great kid, gives it his all. And missed two free throws and was blocked going for a dunk, pretty clear at this point when Fisher comes out we should just go small.

I don't know that the rusty Friday would be much of an improvement. I have a feeling we'll be seeing the smaller lineup more in the tournament.
