Eric Stover played for Saint Bona. I also remember a early season upset of Seton Hall and Bill Rafftery That's it! Thank you! I grew up in Mechanicville and we had one of the bigger, better gyms in those days. We had sectionals and even state playoffs there. Saw Stover, some of the good Albany teams and even saw Mt. Vernon teams w/ the McCray brothers.

I want to say it was at Alb St. Just remember concrete and steps. There was bad blood even then. Maybe even moreSo as things were not as PC.

As we bounce the basketball down memory lane... I remember when our annual rivalry with ALBANY STATE was played at the Albany Armory. The place would be rocking with fans from both schools evenly distributed. The game I best recall was a 36-32 Siena victory with Coach Cunha matching wits on the sidelines with Doc Sauer. Then the victorious Indians poured in to Mike's Log Cabin or Papa's. Hoping for a few more victories over the Great Danes in the near future,

Eric Stover played for Saint Bona. I also remember a early season upset of Seton Hall and Bill Rafftery State champs that year. Had another real good 6'5" kid, Bob Foote. Nisky win the AA state title too, led by John Leonard and Dan Terwilliger.

To this day it is considered as one of, if not the, greatest basketball game ever played in this area. Don Bassett's CCHS team looked like it had back-and-forth the game won, when Paul Hogeboom took the ball to the basket for a layup. Ref blew the whistle and everyone was thinking 3-point play, which would have iced game for CCHS. Instead the ref, who I believe was Brent Steuerwald, called offensive foul on Hogeboom and Mt. Vernon won by a point or two. That CCHS team beat up on Niskayuna in a Class AAA-AA playoff or something like that a week earlier. Niskayuna was originally supposed to play Mt Vernon and CCHS play in the smaller bracket. Section II revered the schools after CCHS beat John Leonard and Dan Terwilliger in the playoff. Niskayuna went on to win a state title, CCHS dropped a heartbreaker to a team led by the McCray brothers who helped Louisville to a pretty good run in the late 70s-early 80s.

Rodney didn't play in that game (broken leg) but Scooter did and he was one of the greatest HS players ever. Denny Crum and Al McGuire were courtside since they were Scooters final two choices.

Is the gym as it existed back than still there? Wait. Maybe I misunderstood your question. Are you saying Siena played Albany in Mechanicville? I do NOT recall that. I wonder if it before the 70s. Technically, the gym IS still there. It was originally part of the high school right in town. Then in '65, they built a new high school a little outside of town and that building became the middle school. That was where I went to school and we had gym classes there, and all HS BB games were still held there (plus wrestling tournaments, etc). It really was a good gym for its time - even had a little 'upper level'. Some time later (late 80s or 90s?), they built another middle school (and elementary school) closer to the high school outside of town on the hill. I think the old building with the good gym stood vacant for a long time and eventually was sold. Now it's beng used for some kind of 'new-age' type program. Here's a pic from their website. I have no idea how old this is, but it looks VERY much like I remember it. Lines still on the nice hardwood floor, baskets up and you can see the 'upper level' in the top left corner.
