I don't have much inside information as I don't have sources it seems some others have, but the field hockey team is being discontinued and is obviously due to the budget. Sucks the school is hurting financially in a good economy hopefully the situation improves. Does anyone have much information on this?

I know some information about the budget has been said in other threads but this has been a main topic and news of the field hockey team I believe calls for this new thread

On the bright side, with all this savings, now the coaching staff can pay for someone to shadow MTS' activities.

Not too much of a stretch to apply some of VP D'Arg's words of wisdom to the one we all used to swell with pride over as another Siena sport bites the dust, actually the non-Astroturf...
“It has been hard to develop a successful program and give our student athletes a rewarding experience when faced both with facility challenges, and when the program cannot be properly funded,” explained D’Argenio. “We have put the student athletes at a competitive disadvantage which cannot be easily solved.”

It sounds like a tough but reasonable decision.

The field hockey program was less competitive than the Men’s bb program. That’s pretty bad.

If the school doesn't have the funds to support a field hockey program, it sure as heck doesn't have the money for a buyout between $700-900K for a guaranteed contract. The school is stuck with Patsos for at least one year, maybe two. The school is in debt. The AD approved a horrendous extension. They will have to live with that mistake for a while longer, but that doesn't mean that have to live with an AD who is coasting toward his golden years. Make a change at the top of the athletic program. Let some new, fresh young blood come in and cut all the dead wood and non-producers in the sports program. Someone with no allegiance or friendship with long-time coaches. This would give the new AD a year or two to search for his guy to run the school's top program.

This may have been the main topic of the recent Athletic Dept and BoT meetings, rather than MBB.

This may have been the main topic of the recent Athletic Dept and BoT meetings, rather than MBB. Not true, I have the meeting minutes here: Br. Ed and D'arg reaffirmed Siena's commitment to JP. D'arg acknoledged the school was in negoatiations with JP for another 4 year guaranteed contract. Br. Ed announced prices will increase for the men's basketball season ticket packages, helping to offset recruiting costs. D'arg announced 1(home)-3(away) series with 351st ranked Delaware St. Additional discussions for home games with Chicago St. and N'western St. The meeting was concluded after Br. Ed and D'arg announced the basketball program was officially on vacation until the start of fall semester.

At tonight's media availability about the field hockey program being dropped, Siena athletic director John D'Argenio wasn't taking questions on any other subject, including the men's basketball program.

seems everyone missed the best line from the TU article "Siena is in the first year of a new strategic plan."
I would say that it appears that Siena is deemphasizing basketball as part of that plan. That is nothing that you will come out and say in the press well...because you still want people writing checks for as long as possible. But over say 8 to 12 years you could deemphasize basketball before anyone really realizes what happened. We are in year 9 of that strategic plan.

They don't have much out there on the new plan. community.siena.edu/academic-affairs/offices/institutional-effectiveness/strategic-planning/tradition-transformed/
