Was going to post something about Evan after the game on Monday but I never got around to it as things kind of blew up on here, but I just want to say how proud I am of him and what he’s done this season. So many of us (including myself) tore him apart all of last season and this offseason. Said he wasn’t a D1 player. Said he should never shoot a 3. Said it was incomprehensible that he ever played. Groaned every time he checked in. And when you watched him in 2016-17, that was a fair conclusion. Evan could have transferred and had several D2 scholarship offers. Gotten a degree, never gotten criticized for his play, and been happy. But he didn’t take the easy way out. He lost the weight and got quick enough so that he was a much more useful player on both ends of the floor. Became the vocal leader of a team that had no seniors and was desperate for someone to step up in that regard. Reinvented his game to be a more complete player, not just a shooter. Now he’s averaging 6 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 block in 25 minutes per game. Those are really solid numbers. He’s far from perfect on the floor, but he’s become a useful rotation player and a heck of a leader. Last game felt like the accumulation of all that work. Instead of running around the perimeter, he played pick and pop and went down in the post to do work too. Had that great scooping And-1 layup. Had 2 blocks, where he continues to impress me. So whatever happens the rest of the way this season and for the rest of his career, I’ll have a big appreciation for Evan and the work he has done to become a useful player after he was written off by so many. Thanks Evan. 4-11

Because captains are not picked for their leadership qualities with this staff. Just as PT is not earned. You are selected based on some criteria only known by Patsos You still bitter about how Lavon was treated his 4 years? If you were so unhappy why didn’t Lavon transfer out where his skills would have been better suited and he could have played for a coach that would have given him a longer leash? I love Nico so don't get me wrong but he was selected captain in a quid pro quo arrangement - you stay, you captain - no other reason to do it.

For those of us who have played on sports teams, we know there is a difference between a team captain and a team leader. Sometimes they are the same players and sometimes they are not. This is a non issue in my opinion as long as the players are all on the same page and our playing for each other.

Time will tell if this is happening with the majority of the squad. Haven't seen it since Steven Cruz left.

@great.... why are you deflecting the issue? Fisher should have been named captain and PPC has hit the nail on the head as far as Patsos’ decisions concerning the team. It’s a revolving door of guesses and sycophancy to see who plays and who doesn’t; who’s in the doghouse and who isn’t .

I’m sorry, but it’s absolutely ridiculous to say that the coaching and strength staff couldn’t have helped him. That’s the spot we’re in with this board... anyone who improves did it completely on their own, anyone who doesn’t its the coaching staff’s fault. That’s insane. It’s a 2-way street. Kids have to want to work, coaches have to put them in positions to succeed and improve. I totally agree it is a 2 way street and that is why it is upsetting to see players not put in the position to succeed at times on the floor, and conversely watch players be counter productive and not develop a muscle when you know they have a personal trainer available at will (kind of like going to a weight watcher's meeting and then off to Pizza Hut for a deep dish pie) I am very happy for Evan. He is a hard worker and a great young man. I wish the best for him. It was nice to see him stroking his shot smoothly and confidently which isn't always easy when you are working on conditioning. As your muscles change, your stroke changes. Evan may be in a good physical place right now and it may go a long way to help the team. You hit upon an important topic..."as your muscles change your stroke changes"...we were not allowed to work out 48 hours before a game....a great test for this is shoot 20 free throws...go lift some weights...then go shoot 20 free throws again...see how many you make Jim Secretarski is a great example of this...he came to Siena as a great 3 pt shooter and by the time he graduated he looked like a bull but could no longer make a 3...

Let me start by saying I have been an unabashed supporter of Evan from day one, never wavered (maybe sometimes the only one). The young man has potential and plays with an uncommon intensity and I was surprised and disappointed that he was not named captain this year. I don't know how captains are selected these days, back when dinosaurs ruled the earth, the team voted and presented their recommendation to the coaching staff who named the captain and assistant captains (in hockey), usually following the recommendations of the players. The captain wasn't always the top scorer, or flashiest player, but it seems most often, he was the guy you were glad was on your team and not someone else's. He had the team's respect. He was the coaches "stand in" among his peers, in the locker room, off the ice, and on the ice. Perhaps Jimmy's gambit and gamble with Degnan was "I'll give you something if you work to show me something". Clearly if this was the case, it is not working out and that puts the staff in the uncomfortable position of having to "uncaptain" him next year.
As for Evan's "shortcomings", real and imagined, if he could move better laterally, jump 6 inches higher, and shoot 3's at 40%, you can be sure he would not be at Siena. What he does bring is that he plays with passion, intensity, and hustle every minute he is on the court. He doesn't play with "swagger" he is a workman, albeit a vocal one, who believes the team always has a chance. Give me four out of five of those kind of guys on the court every game (the other can be "Hollywood") and we will win significantly more games than we lose. There is still half of a season to go this year and Evan has all of next year (barring injury), lets cheer him on and celebrate his successes (and the team's successes) and see where it takes us.
If anyone is wondering, I am not Evan's dad or even a relative (I shook his hand once though, lol), I have been on this board since the days of Rob Lanier, almost before Evan was even born. I may not be the best technical basketball guy (I couldn't draw up the simplest of plays) but it is not that different from hockey and you can appreciate athletes not matter what the sport. Let's go Saints!

Lol Lavon has moved on and is doing well. He let the fans know that he enjoyed their support for 4 years in his farewell speech. I have no regrets about his time at Siena. A 4 year starter that played every position on the floor. He was able to play his game for Siena. Nice try tho but Lavon Long has nothing to do with my comments

Did Evan’s dad start this thread? Yikes. Absolutely no relation to Evan. In fact Ive never even spoken to the young man. I simply thought he deserved some love for how he has played of late, another workmanlike effort tonight with 8 points and 9 boards while not 100%. Everyone gave up on this kid and he fought back and put in a ton of work and has given us some solid minutes.

I'm a huge fan of 2018 Evan so far, 2017 Evan was pretty terrible though. I prefer to evaluate last year as he wasn't being used properly - put in positions to fail So I guess the HC put him position to be successful this year? Lmao....or, how about he wasn't very good his first two years, worked hard, and got better?? Imagine that! The player taking blame for his shortcomings, and credit for his successes!

I think Evan has surprised a few people, myself included, with his play as of late. Kudos to him and I hope he keeps it up.

Evan has really improved from his prior seasons, and also improved within this season. He may not have star level talent, but he obviously puts forth great effort, and tries to help his team as much as possible. Add to that now this academic recognition. Good for him on all counts.
