We have our closed scrimmage vs UMass tomorrow at TUC and our open exhibition next Saturday at the ARC vs Le Moyne. A look at both teams:
UMass is a team in transition, with a new coach in former Chattanooga head man Matt McCall and 4 transfers (including Fairfield's Curtis Cobb) sitting out this year. They also lost their point guard (grad transfer from Maryland) when it was discovered he has a heart issue and will be without their best player in center Rashaan Holloway. They'll only have 7 scholarship players, 3 of whom are freshmen, available for the game as well as a walk-on who is likely to get minutes this year. They are going to get picked in the 11-14 range of the A10. Winnable game for sure if we go all in, interested to hear the result.
Le Moyne won 22 games last season and was a top 25 team in D2. They bring back 4 starters and their top 4 scorers from a season ago. They don't have a ton of size but have talented guards and play good defense. A game we should win, but good enough to be a very good test for us.

UMASS seems to have a pretty good D. It might be one of the best we'll face all year. Their biggest question marks seem to be on offense.

Regarding Evan, my worry is that he still has lead feet and that his dribble is too high and too slow. Losing the 15 lbs probably helped some but he was never as quick and smooth with his movements as Brett was. Maybe the Canadian teams weren't guarding him close enough or weren't big enough to get him in trouble.
Should he underperform early, I'd have no issue turning to Heurter and letting him act as a glue guy. He'd probably be better defensively and that might be more important this year.

I'm confused one poster says U Mass is decimated, while another says they have the best defense Saints will see. Can anyone properly spell Tom Huerter's name Correctly?

It is simultaneously an indictment of MAAC defenses. Kenpom predicts UMASS with 129th ranked D. They have athletes.

Nice to hear Friday played well, we know the kid has talent, conditioning and effort has always been his question mark. Jimmy may have been sending Sammy a message in Canada, and hopefully Sammy got that message. Another positive, Penn played well, PG is a big question mark for us this year. We are going to need a solid year out of Penn.
And as I say every year – other than who played well, many fans take way too much out of these secret scrimmages. Take the results with grain of salt; these scrimmages are rarely played as traditional games. Normally these games aren’t a strict simulation of a real game. It’s more like a practice with refs. Usually, the two head coaches discuss some specific strengths or weaknesses they want to focus on. Running clock, players fouls are reset (nobody fouls out of a secret scrimmage) you get the picture.

You will get Horn or Nico on any given game. I dont think they can exist on the court together much unless Horn plays the point and defers to Nico. They look to be the same type of option for team.

I suggest you watch some Horn tape. He isn’t the same player as Nico by any means. Very willing passer, doesn’t have the explosiveness to take over off the bounce, willing to space the floor and hit 3’s. Horn’s presence at the 2 next to Nico at the 3 is great for Nico because it allows him to slash more and get to the rim rather than chuck 3’s.

I'm my humble opinion Nico should only shoot 3s in transition if open or half court sets of penetration kick outs.Other then that he should attack and finish or get to the free throw line. There's no reason he shouldn't lead the league in free throw attempts, and not 3pt attempts. He shouldn't lead the team in 3pt attempts by a lot,it should be close between him and Horn and then everyone else sprinkled in.A green light can be good for cars not players who haven't shown the ability to handle it.Hey may be the best player on the team but, also hasn't lead a team before.Like the freshman it's new to him to lead,so let's not give him that green light so quick.Just my i opinion.
