www.troyrecord.com/sports/20170330/siena-basketball-target-commits-to-vermontThought this story deserved its own thread- I agree we are only hearing one side of this story- but the reality is this has been an ongoing situation. As a group Division 1 head coaches are hardworking SOB’s- look no further than Bob Huggins comments after advancing to Sweet 16- ( reporter) how are you going to celebrate coach- ( coach Huggins) probably go on road recruiting. Or Vermont’s John Becker after playing a game in the NCAA- what does he do- he travels to Maine, has a in home visit with Nash and sets up visit the following weekend, these two examples are not the ‘exception” it’s pretty much the life of a successful D1 coach. I get D1 coaches put in a lot of hours between Oct and early March. And I certainly don’t begrudge our head coach taking vacation. But let’s examine what our coach has done since losing to Iona. First he takes off to Atlanta for a week to do some TV ( no biggie) but immediately after that he heads to Vietnam. So he basically takes off the last 3 weeks in a critical recruiting period. And hey it’s a working vacation- he promotes himself by doing some radio for Atlanta and Maryland stations- unfortunately no time for recruiting. We know what he does in May and June, July and August. I believe the situation with Nash, goes a long way to explaining his “glaring” failures recruiting in competitive situations, hard to land a kid when the opposing coaches are consistently outworking you. Explains why he basically lands kids with little or no offers- let’s face it those type kids require the least amount of “work” they are happy to get a D1 offer. Unfortunately when you recruit like that you are not vetting the kids, looking for that diamond in the rough, you are just trying to get kids- explains our absurdly high transfer rate under this coach. If recruiting is the life blood of a Division 1 program, Patsos recruiting goes a long way to explain why the Siena program is on life support. Most D1 coaches live to coach—our head coach coaches to live and consistently works in recruiting around his vacations and partying. And that just doesn’t get it done in today’s D1 atmosphere. The sooner Jimmy Patsos and Siena "part" ways the better off everyone concerned will be

Think we can all agree JP is a renaissance man ... a jack of trades on all topics a master of none ... this is why he's a media darling - no down time on live media - no lack of quotes for print media ... he does not live and breathe basketball like many of his peers ... this is not going to change now or in the future ... we can only hope that the new assistant fills this void - someone who can close the deal on our recruits and would not have allowed the mess with Nash

"Nash wasn’t interested in doing that. So he ended his recruitment with Siena, and committed to Vermont earlier on Thursday. Nash, a shooting guard, is the No. 1 rated recruit in the state of Maine.“From my end, it was a lack of organization I think,” Nash told The Record. “...That put a bad taste in my mouth. It was a frustrating thing to go through, just because of the excitement I had for the school." Pathetic excuse for a head coach especially in light of 4 seniors departing. A top recruit was informed the HC is on vacation ? WHAT ?

I'm not certain that the leader of the pack conveys clear messages (he is unable to complete sentences) to his assistants, has a concise idea of the shape/makeup/balance of next year's and the year after's team (needed for meaningful targeting/recruiting), and is supportive following through with helping them land the recruits they identify. Clearly, in Nash's case, JP was absolutely no help - he was not only off the ranch but out of the country...... (sorry Musicman, I need to inject a little humor for my own good).

It's about the way it went down and the media attention to it that matters at this point. I know it's hard, but try to keep up.

There are always openings when you think you have to fix the errors of your ways........ instead of sticking with picking choices to fit the system you want to implement. Oh wait, that whole 'system' thing....that doesn't work out right??
Ask any successful coach about CHOOSING the PIECES to FIT into your SYSTEM in the first place, and MANAGING said personnel by putting them in POSITION to enhance the ATTRIBUTES you CHOSE them for. What a freaking novel concept! If they violate rules, or turn out to be disruptive, handle it, that is what you are PAID to do.

He's in the wrong profession though. Should be at a D3 school that cares about the "other stuff" and the commitment isn't as important or he should just be a TV commentator. He is a dead man walking and a lame duck. Patsos is toast in 345 days. Everyone sit back and enjoy the last ride of this clown show. Expect more disappointment and embarrassment along the way. I hope Siena gets the next hire right because it's their last chance.

Why is Gonzaga successful?
A small cathOlIc school in Spokane Washington.
Gonzaga is a good school and bigger than Siena, but Siena has a great fanbase, large arena ad excellent local press.
The difference IMHO is the BOT and Administration of Gonzaga knows the value that TV publicity brings to school admissions, donations , and outside impressions as to the quality of the school.
Our BOT , AD and as far as I cam tell current President DON'T GET IT.
I was initially excited about Fr Kevin as a President who would continue the success under Fran ( which was INMHO a lucky move anyway, since they gave the job to Lanier instead of Fran on his first request for the job-another priestly (Fr Toal ) move that we all regret).
Kevin made two hires while President-
the PW and so-so, were HORRIBLE and the decisions infected with nepotism and laziness.
WE NEED THE bot TO ESTABLISH A BLUE RIBON PANEL OR HIRE PROFESSIONAL OUTSIDERS TO RECCOMMEND THE NEXT COACH.
I you don't change the process you will get the same results.

Not meaning to throw any stones at Fr Kevin, but I do recall the euphoria that seemed to penetrate the basketball programs when he was announced as President because he was a hoop guy and all thought that would help us rise to new heights with "one of our own" in the top seat. Perhaps, in hindsight, that resume entry might not be a strength after all if the person has a feeling that they know the sport to the levels and depths needed to hire a good coach and, given their position in the school, have an out of proportion influence on hoop related decisions.
