Javion is really not a very good defensive rebounder, he goes for the block a little too often at the expense of boxing out his man. Silas does a better job of picking when to go all out for the block and when to just contest the shot and box out. Just compare the career numbers:
Javion has 101 offensive rebounds compared to 102 defensive rebounds, almost equal on both ends Silas has 118 offensive rebounds compared to 151 defensive rebounds
And I'm sure the ratio of defensive rebounds would go way higher for Silas if you exclude all the offensive boards off of his own missed layups.

And JO seems to be the better defender with the exception of the shot-blocking which I acknowledge is part, and a big part, of that equation. But JO can go chest to chest on guys without fouling as he did in the CBI final

But JO can go chest to chest on guys without fouling as he did in the CBI final JO improved a lot I thought. It's tough to gauge who is better but he does foul 1 less per 40 minutes than Silas but he also blocks 1 less shot...so they're really even. I'd say that Silas is the more physical in protecting his space and boxing out...and that's part of why he rebounds over 2 boards per 40 mins better. If JO experiences more of a progression this year, I could see him putting the debate to rest. For now, I'd give the edge to Silas overall defensively...especially since it showed in the Win column and defensive rankings when he was the starter.

I definitely agree with KK-- as a duo they are very very good, they compliment each others weakness well. As for JO being better 2017/18 he might be- but it might not be for Jimmy Patsos. Many many fans are on fence with Jimmy, any more talk about needing more talent ( after he signed a walk on) is out the window. Matter of fact don't want to hear any excuses this year. I'm sure he feels comfortable with players like Paige and Cam doing battle with the Iona and Manhattan's/ Quinny's etc otherwise he wouldn't have signed them

Silas has 1145 career minutes and JO has 1158
The career sample size to this point is very comparable. Just 13 minutes different.
In my eyes, they are overall equals with JO just having more upside.
If it was my decision I'd start with a firm 20/20 split with them and adjust it depending on how the rest of the team performs around them and the needs. Alternate them in and out all game long. 5 mins in, 5 mins out. They stay fresh and are able to play tough and aggressive all game.
If rebounding is good at the other 4 positions, then you could play JO more for the scoring and reduce Silas' minutes.
I really would love to see this tandem vs the MAAC this year and see if they can really just outwork teams inside.

A few things on that career sample size—JO played as true freshmen Silas did not ( he practiced with team) in fact Silas 1st year he was about age JO is right now. JO beat Silas out as freshmen ( and got hurt and lost his confidence) Silas could barely get of bench vs Fresno- we don’t win CBI without JO. Silas blocks more shot but he is not a better defender that JO—Silas is better rebounder and certainly brings more ‘toughness” Silas has never been able to play more than 17 mpg due to foul trouble. I’m very doubtful JO plays this year, but if he does I expect somewhere around a 27/13 spilt in favor of JO- he is just a better player

I just value the rebounding more I guess, and the fact that I get a kick out of watching Silas block shots like he's one of the monsters in Space Jam. 38 rpg down to 33 rpg. That really bothers me. This is a better rebounding team than that and I want it fixed and someone to just intimidate.

No doubt Silas bring that toughness.. and bringing back Brett will help tremendously with rebounding. We really aren't that far apart- we both hope JO can play this year makes us much stronger having two headed monster at Center

I'm not saying he's a starter in the MAAC, but that's hardly a wasted scholarship.

Even if he never develops into a starting SF...he's a great team guy. He rebounds very well for his size (better rate than both JO and Lavon), he makes his FT's, he fouls less, and he always finds a way to get open and finish. I really liked him coming out of HS. It just comes down to whether he can shoot and handle the ball enough to play the 3 full time. It seemed like he could shoot in HS. If he's upping his game it's a bonus.

That's the thing. He just seems to get it done. He's not the prototypical 3 or 4. He's that kid you just label, "player." He'll be a nice guy off the bench for us the next 3 years.
