To use the last scholarship now, Jimmy has to get a player who is as good as what he can get out of the HS Class of 2016 or via a mid-year transfer next December. Never say never, but given that it is almost the first of June, is finding someone now realistic? The poll is certainly much smaller than it was a couple of months ago.

What would have happened if Smithen didn't call Siena? Would Siena have 2 scholarships open now?
Iona reportedly offers someone new every day. We go months sometimes without hearing about one.
Who is hitting the trail? I don't believe that you should ever leave a scholarship on the table in this day and age.
Siena had a full roster going into last year and was still thin depth wise.
Don't even let me bring up MBII. 6.5 frickin guys.
There is no reason to leave them on the table. NONE.

I agree that he should not fill the ship unless its a difference maker recruit (highly unlikely) or a very good transfer who can help in 16 (Chukwu might fit that example). At least if we get the transfer now the kid can practice and learn the system for a year while providing practice depth. The downside of not filling it is that Jimmy has stated that he is redshirting LaRose and Smithen is sitting out so in essence we have 10 players (please don't consider walk ons as viable) and if we get any injuries or other issues we could again be rather thin. IF we remain at 12 scholarship players and 10 available next year I would think JP might want to reconsider the redshirt of LaRose.

We keep talking about redshirts. So far, how many non-injury redshirts have we actually had where the player stayed? ZERO. Wright, Wormley Clareth, Oliver Long, Paige That's all we got in the backcourt if he redshirts. Bisping, Fisher Silas, WB In the frontcourt. 2 of those coming off of injures. If one big gets hurt, Long/Paige spend a lot of time at the PF again and we'll need LaRose. If one guard gets hurt, we'll need LaRose. If Paige struggles as a SF, we'll need LaRose. If Wormley or Clareth struggle, we'll need LaRose. At worst, the kid is 1 single bad event away from potentially cracking the playing rotation. With the roster the way it is, I don't want to hear redshirt ever again. Not after MBII. Not after last year. Siena fans should know better.

All I've seen him say about him is that he will have to get accustomed to the speed of the game at this level. As for those suggesting Patsos loads up on transfers and Jucos - not gonna happen. He laid out his recruiting strategy at Siena back in January: “I like a player that fits in at Siena. We just get kids out of high school that are going to come here, do well in school, fit in with the community, play hard, graduate. We have some limitations. The grad school thing is very interesting right now. People have fifth year players that have gone to other schools, graduated and then (gone on). We don’t have that. So I don’t have an instant…. I can’t go get a guy and say come here. My friend MIke Lonergan at GW is using that to his advantage. There’s nothing wrong with that. We’re probably going to recruit, get basically high school kids that are gonna come out, come here, get a good degree.”“We’ve got a couple scholarships. I want kids that fit into the Siena mold. That’s like coming out of high school, doing really well in school and coming here. If we get some at-risk kids that’s fine too. I don’t mind that. I like what we have but we’ve got some scholarships out there. So, if you’re interested in Siena and you can make three-pointers and stop your guy from making three-pointers my phone number is……”4guysinblazers.com/comments-from-this-weeks-media-luncheon-with-jimmy-patsos/12882An interesting tid-bit from the media luncheon these quotes come from is the fact that WB and Paige were originally going to redshirt. But the injuries forced them into service. I don't remember hearing about that before.

HJ has been posting the LaRose redshirt stuff for awhile. I don't know, for some reason I believe he has some insight here.
“Cam Gottfried’s redshirting. I’m interested to see what he can do. He’s good in practice. We’ve got to redshirt him. I’m not gonna pull his redshirt now so he can play 10 minutes a game.I don’t know what Cameron’s going to do. Cameron’s going to decide at the end of the year. His deal was play one (as a walk-on) and get three (scholarship). Cameron came here and just wanted to see if he can play here and then he said I want a redshirt year. Cameron Gottfried’s a great kid and he’s a good rebounder. We’ll figure that all out in the spring. He wanted to redshirt because he wasn’t going to play."
Another tidbit from that media luncheon. Hmmmmmm

Last year, at certain points, Jimmy mentioned redshirts of Wolfe, White, Paige, WB and Gottfried. Gottfried was a walk on. Wolfe left. Everyone else played.
Wolfe and Gottfried were the only ones who were gonna redshirt before Silas went out for the season. All the others played in the exhibition.
Jimmy makes big talk in spring time and preseason. Let's wait until the frosh actually arrive and he sees what's in front of him. Even with that, we won't know for sure until November.
Considering that last year we were preparing to do battle with 12 guys, I'm finding it hard to believe that Jimmy knows what he wants at this point.
You don't ever want to risk being below 10 guys within the season. Including LaRose AND Gottfried, we'd be at 12. You shouldn't redshirt your 11th man. 13th? Yes. 12th? Ok fine. But 11th? I don't think so....especially not with the rate this team fouls.
LaRose would have to be behind Gottfried on the depth chart. That's the only reason to even consider it. Even then, the kid is supposed to be a shooter on a team whose guards may struggle from three.
This is Jimmy talk. That's it.

LaRose will redshirt. He's 17, and played against horrible competition his whole life. He, and the program, will benefit from a RS year.
I'm guessing Cam is better than him right now, and Jimmy knows it. So add Cam as the 5th guard, and Paige to spell Long at the 3 occasionally.
Wormley will get more minutes NEXT to Wright than most think. Which means Oliver/Nico could play in some 3 guard sets too.
The 120 minutes a game at the 1-3 spots wil be fine without LaRose. (I'll let MTS fill in each guys min!)

Do we will play a lot if s lineup with a 1, 2, 2, 4, and 4/5. I could see a lot of Wright, Worm, Clareth/Oliver, Brett, Evan/Imoh/WB. This will ease the issue of not having a natural 3 on the roster

Put on your big boy pants. Go out there and recruit like one. I see both Wormley and Clareth getting lots of time as they both drive, defend, and handle. Jimmy needs them for the press. But, the team also needs to be able to shoot threes to keep teams honest. Wormely has a history as an inconsistent shooter and doesn't even shoot FTs at a 70% clip. Clareth could be a good shooter but those AAU stats stick in my head where he shot 29%. Is he the 40% guy or the 29% guy? If he doesn't shoot well, who does that leave? Oliver, some pick and pop forwards, and a bunch of unknowns. Don't write off a shooter in April. Not on this team.

Cam is a D2 player so what's that say about LaRose?
I said it before ill say it again I never understood the LaRose offer given our current state and needs. Made zero sense. No one was beating his door down. There was no rush to offer.
Let's hope he matures into a player!
