Yes I remember Deane and Kirsch. Both no nonsense men. Deane moved on and Siena holds that against him instead of complimenting him for what he did for the program. School needs to make up its mind what kind of coach it wants more importantly how far the program should be. Loosen the reins Franciscans.

Funny, I was at all of those games, home and away and I don't remember Fran berating a member of his staff publicly. Players, I'm OK with comes with the territory. I'll also bet the opposing coach in the tourney was an asshole. Would love to know specifically who that was? probably Patsos lol.

Hey when you are losing everything is fair game-- injuries, days of rest, the schedule, talent, assistants, transfers, and raving lunatic behavior on the sidelines.
I'm quite sure it was Masiello of Manhattan against Siena in the tourney in Springfield. Mitch was our coach at the time.
th24 was quite clear he was talking about Fran doing the yelling at the MAAC (Manhattan) coach. Keep up..... ps--you too Gorvy!! lol

So you want passion- with out the craziness or yelling ! Ummmm...what kinda basketball sidelines have you been watching! lol I will remind you that Saint Fran yelled his ass off both in practice and on the court! And he ripped into coaches & players left and right when they did something dumb! And I remember being at one practice...where he ripped into Clarance Jackson like no tomorrow! And there was another time that he yelled across the court to the opposing coach -in MAAC Tournament - and told him to Fck off! But fans were willling to look the the way ...Why? Because we won!

Fran could recruit, coach and regardless of the occasional outburst was professional and very calculating. The side show you get with Patsos coupled with the fact that he's not a very good coach (game mgmt, X's & O's) makes your comparison appear silly. Did Fran have an occasional outburst sure, but nothing like Patsos. I've watched him game after game berate players and staff to no end ....... After awhile that BS becomes totally ineffective and people just tune you out. Win or lose. As usual you miss the mark entirely.

If I recall correctly Deane wanted to stay, but he wanted a little more to stay, but much less than Marquette gave him. It's been a long time, so I may be wrong.

I would prefer a coach how just stood there with his arms folded..... Well, we are proving that neither approach works, so it might be a good idea to try somewhere in the middle.

I remember Fran yelling at Mitch and Carter (not at same times). It was rare compared to Jimmy but Fran told them to shut the F up various times at away games. He also told players that too but I remember a handful of times he said it to assistants.
I'm less concerned about how much Jimmy gets into it with his assistants. As some have said, Jimmy can't help it and/or it's who he is. If Luke & Greg haven't figured it out working with him over the years I'm sure they know by now. They're still with him, maybe they understand it's an act or it's simply Jimmy. What ever it is, they're still with him. Must be a reason.

View AttachmentNot sure if we're talking about the same situation or not, but I remember Fran going off on Barry Rohrsson (spelling?) of Manhattan at the TUC, but only after a couple of particularly brutal fouls by Manhattan players against Fran's guys. After the game, Rohrsson was seemingly bewildered as to why Fran wouldn't shake his hand. And, as Greenblood said in response to your post, I don't remember Fran ever yelling at a coach in public. He was here five years, so maybe it happened, but I seriously doubt it, and certainly not in a game. At practice (if that's what you mean by "in public"), maybe. But with Fran, once the yelling was over, that was pretty much it. Two minutes later everything was back to business, and no hard feelings. Mitch/Jimmy didn't/haven't mastered that part of the process.

Let's not forget the Willard/Holy Cross debacle. Fran went ballistic on Ralph too. Ending the series over a beef, and publicly bashing him.

If you, me or anyone else behaved that way, we'd be disciplined in some fashion.......fined, suspended, referred for counseling, etc.......because we would be creating a hostile work environment for everyone around us. And if the behavior continued, we'd be gone. Same rules should apply here. I know that coaches have gotten away with this kind of stuff for as long as there have been coaches, but it shouldn't be that way. If they can't control their emotions any better than we have witnessed, maybe this isn't the right profession for them.

I was at that game at Holy Cross. What's the expression...........it was a "very physical game"? It was, to say the least. Fran's guys were getting hammered left and right, and then I think it was Kenny who got absolutely leveled. I don't blame Fran for his reaction. I thought that it was deserved, and that he was sticking up for his players. They will tell you the same thing.

HC wasn't a debacle on Fran's part HC was over the top physical and Fran was completely in the right on that one.
