Jimmy Patsos is crazy. The veracity of this statement would come as a surprise to zero Siena fans before coach Patsos was ever even considered for, or accepted, the Siena head coaching position. I say this endearingly, because his craziness is a manic, demonstrative one that, as an opposing fan, was always an entertaining spectacle to watch. I know this behavior is grating to some Siena fans now that he's at the helm of the Saints, even though the behavior shouldn't necessarily come as a surprise. It kind of reminds me of the quote from the movie Hoosiers, from Hickory's ousted Coach George: "Look, mister, there's... two kinds of dumb, uh... guy that gets naked and runs out in the snow and barks at the moon, and, uh, guy who does the same thing in my living room. First one don't matter, the second one you're kinda forced to deal with." I'm of the belief that this behavior is tiresome because the number in the losses column is higher than the one in the wins column. #Math (That's for you Greenblood ). This got me thinking about some of the other demonstrative coaches in D1 hoops today - the fun, the menacing, and the few in-between. In no particular order: Buzz Williams - Virginia Tech (and formerly Marquette) coach Buzz Williams knows a thing or two about putting on a show during a game. Buzz' Frank Martin - South Carolina (formerly Kansas St.) is one scary dude. Blunt and honest to a fault, he was very accurately given the first name "Frank". Barry Hinson - Southern Illinois. Tom Crean - Indiana - There's plenty of videos out there of Crean being a total spazz, but here's a picture of him essentially playing D Josh Pastner - Memphis - At least the scorer's table looks padded. Not pictured (because you've seen it a thousand times) - Boeheim, Fran, Bobby Knight Anyways - at this point in the season, I'm sick & tired of being sick & tired about the team's inconsistencies, and comparing our current head coaches to recent previous ones. I'm not to the point of apathy, it's just that nothing surprises me. I'm going to sit back, have some popcorn & pop, and enjoy the rest of the show. If Jimmy could just learn some of Buzz Williams' dance moves, I'll know I've gotten my money's worth.

Very entertaining - especially love the Seal Team 6 sniper rant - have seen that many times. I do notice that the crazy coaches, in their sideline acts, are actually following the game in progress and I didn't see one coaching rant against an assistant or bench players!

Great post, thanks. I will look at these all in entirety after 5 today. Unfortunately (or hopefully fortunately for some) I am in the middle of re-writing a clinical trial protocol for acute lymphoblastic b-cell leukemia. But, if you could help me, is there any video of any of these demonstrative (great descriptor) coaches going off on their staff mid game? I'm just asking. I have no problem when a D-1 scholarship player makes a DUMB mistake with the HC getting up in his face and saying 'I asked you a F'ing question'. In fact, I laughed at Jimmy when at Purdue last year he took off his suit jacket and handed it to Rob demonstratively stating that if he thought his ideas were better, he should put on the jacket - actually wish I had that on video.

I'll go to the games, enjoy the kids and hope for the best. Everything about this season has be debated and expressed a hundred times over. I have enjoyed the talk about recruiting the past few weeks and news of the kids coming in next year. This new talent coming in will give us plenty to talk about and speculate on. As far as this year, there's just no sense beating a dead horse day after day. It hasn't been what any of us has wanted. Let's all give the kids the support they deserve for the rest of the season. Please try to be positive for the players even if you're not happy with where the program is today. No one is.

I think Hoopjunkie said it best yesterday if you win 95% (I'd actually making it 99%) of the people really don't care about sideline "behavior". When you win you're a fiery, passionate coach who's players would run through a brick wall for and when you lose you're a lunatic. Pretty simple IMHO.

So you want passion- with out the craziness or yelling ! Ummmm...what kinda basketball sidelines have you been watching! lol I will remind you that Saint Fran yelled his ass off both in practice and on the court! And he ripped into coaches & players left and right when they did something dumb! And I remember being at one practice...where he ripped into Clarance Jackson like no tomorrow! And there was another time that he yelled across the court to the opposing coach -in MAAC Tournament - and told him to Fck off! But fans were willling to look the the way ...Why? Because we won!

Funny, I was at all of those games, home and away and I don't remember Fran berating a member of his staff publicly. Players, I'm OK with comes with the territory.
I'll also bet the opposing coach in the tourney was an asshole. Would love to know specifically who that was?

Go back and watch some old Maryland tape of Gary Williams on the sideline. Gary always appeared that he was about to bust a vein. He sweated out his suits and went up and down the sideline cursing at the players on the bench not on the court. This drove some Maryland fans crazy, becaused it appeared Gary was not paying attention nor providing game strategy. Maryland fans thought Gary was very hyper and out of control at times. The annoucers saw him as competitive. Jimmy spent 10 years with Gary and learned his behavior from one of the best.
When Gary took Maryland to back to back Final Fours and a National Championship, his coaching blunders of the first 20 years were forgiven. lol

If I had to pick which one I was to be yelled at by, I'd go with Jimmy on first glance. There were times the look in Fran's eyes was almost murderous.

Agree with the comments on Fran. But we have had other "demonstrative" coaches as anyone who saw Bill Kirsch or Mike Deane go off on a ref or player would attest. But their acts seemed to serve a purpose. Jimmy's antics are way past demonstrative. And often seemed pointless and attention grabbing. But TH24 is right about the "Ws" curing a lot. And the one court stuff would even be tolerable but the off court vaudeville act has gotten old.
