That explains why he wasn't at UMASS, but what about the Vermont game at home??? Or does the 3 mile trek to the TUC constitute 'traveling'?? I thought the same thing. Seems like a concise (I know it's Twitter; everything's concise, but still) answer to quell any other questions about the topic. Not seeing him on the bench for the Vermont game (at least i didn't see him) made me question his future on this team.

Jimmy knows its a business but he also knows how to stick with bigger names. That being said he will do everything possible not to shaft Cam because who knows Siena could land someone or something based on the relationship with the Gottfrieds. Don't see that happening, the fact Gottfried is red shirting tells me he is gone. Jimmy is letting him stay the year and it isn't costing Siena anything, you dont red shirt a walk on. Sorry the kid isn't a D1 player As a Siena fans that pays a lot of money for my seats, I would be outraged, if Jimmy burnt a scholarship on a walk on to "land something from the Gottfrieds" that might have flown at Loyola where nobody pays attention to team, not here at Siena

Jimmy Merril is local and there has never been any indication that he would possibly get a scholarship.

What is the purpose of a redshirt for a walk on? So they can be practice squad depth for 5 years? Seems odd, to me.

What a load of b.s! It's amazing ...how everyone has intimate knowledge of the team, scholarships and players! When they know nothing ! LoL

After rethinking the redshirt freshman walk on, it would seem it would be more for the benefit of the student. If they were to transfer they would still have 4 years to play at another school. Makes sense in that regard as would Gottfrieds dad getting Jimmy to get his son some D1 practice time to see if he can compete at this level and hone his craft a bit before moving on.

Jimmy Merrill redshirted last season. He is a walkon IJS Fran redshirted walk on Erik Harris also. Redshirting has nothing to do with whether a player is on scholarship or not. It's about preserving eligibility.

Yes, someone just reminded me yesterday that Erik redshirted. I realize that anyone can preserve their eligibility by redshirting, I just don't really understand why a walk on would want to. That being said one scenario I could see is if an opportunity to play while getting a masters' degree somewhere came up, a kid like Jimmy or Cam having 4 years of D-1 practice experience may be a very valuable commodity.

Erik Harris played his 4th year of eligibility at Pace.
