www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/eye-on-college-basketball/24750879/-15-college-basketball-conference-preview-atlantic-10Here's the blurb on UMASS: 4. Massachusetts I'm actually picking UMass to finish better this season than it did last, when the Minutemen tied for fifth. (Again, the league was that good.) Though Chaz Williams is gone, Cady Lalanne is set up to be the team's best player, with a lot of help from Derrick Gordon, Trey Davis, Jabarie Hinds and Maxie Esho. Derek Kellogg has Amherst hopping again. This will be a fun team. Defensively, I don't think there will be much of a drop-off. There will be a lot of challenges, and certainly some losses, to start the season. But we'll get a good idea of what UMass is after it plays Florida State, Notre Dame, Harvard (road), LSU (road), Florida Gulf Coast, Providence (road), BYU (road) and Iona. WHAT? Kellogg, have you lost your mind? I love you for this. UMass' power numbers are going to be incredibly strong if the Minutemen break even in the eight games listed above.

What? Siena not even mentioned in this preview. If Wright continues to stay healthy Siena will win this game going away.

No question UMass will be our toughest non-conference game this year and probably the toughest team we will face all season (unless we make the NCAA tournament). They might not be as good as they were last year (were a #6 seed in the NCAAs) but they are a top A10 team and capable of going dancing again. That said, if we play well and shoot the ball well we have a chance to upset them. The game is exactly a month from tomorrow...can't wait! Let's go Saints!

UMASS' trio of Cady, Jabarie and Gordon are three players who will get buckets to complement Trey Davis.
Personally, I don't think UMASS will finish as high as 4th in the A10, but I also don't think they'd fall as low as 7th. Regardless of their pre-season rankings, they will be the most talented non-conference team Siena plays this season.

Not just non-conference You're probably right, but I'm interested in the UMASS-Iona game. Both teams have a few high level players but little depth.

I expect Iona to beat Umass. When your star player and perhaps leading scorer has a career 16-126 assist ratio, you have to figure there's not exactly gonna be a free flowing offense. We went thru this with OD.

The key to this game will be UMASS's lack of depth!! Can they keep up for the entire game?!

If Siena is anywhere near where they were end of last season, they should beat Umass. Umass can't shoot or make FTs, all their players will be adjusting to new roles, and their strength is rebounding which coincidentally is also our strength. Jabarie Hinds is certainly no Chazz Williams. And to be quite honest, I think he's no Marquis Wright either. They could struggle with turnovers...especially early. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/jabarie-hinds-1.htmlSiena is deeper and has more experience right now. If Bisping is in CBI form in this one, I think the Saints get the W. Saints do well when they play other defensive oriented teams. And Umass got to the FT line less than us (per game) last year despite having the 12th fastest tempo in the nation. I don't think they can play as fast, control the ball as well, or even get to the line as much without Chazz. That would be fine if they had shooters like last year, but they don't. They have 0 proven depth past their top 5 players. Literally, not one guy who has ever averaged more than 8 mpg on the D1 level. And that was like one guy. I'm sure they'll be all over us on defense early but the Saints should wear them down. If the offense is really clicking, we could have the 5 Umass fans at the game slitting their wrists by half time.

Siena can beat UMass but they will be an underdog. If you use last year's Sagarins (which encompass all postseason games) Siena would be an 11-point underdog at UMass. I'm guessing the Vegas line won't be that high but probably will be 7.5-8 points. Siena can definitely win this game but it will be a decent upset. Now if this game were at the TUC I'd really like our chances.
We need to beat Vermont, UAlbany, Bucknell, Cornell and @ Loyola - if we go 2-2 in the other 4 OOC games (@ UMass, @ St. Bonaventure, @ Fordham, @ Radford) and are 7-2 I'll be very pleased.
