Alex Kline @therecruitscoop 6m Indiana has landed a commitment from 2014 PF Emmitt Holt - who opted to not take a postgrad year at Vermont Academy (VT). Well that stinks!!

Hope the staff stays with him, wishes him well, and we'll get him in two years when Crean recruits over him.

There you go.....this is what happens when we compete with the Big Ten for a player. That's why I like the talented overlooked guys....we can sign them but will lose this type of fight every time.

I dont look at it that way-- you have to be in the game to win one occasionally .. those type recruits you will lose 4 out of 5 times.. but the one out of 5 you win are OD ( 35 scholarships offers) beat out several A10 teams-- most of the CAA-- Basbabe ( even though he went with Fran) Clarence Jackson-- etc etc those type of players you dominate the MAAC with .. and beside Holt is a special case Indiana is desperate.. 6'6' power forward seldom make it in Big Ten.. keep recruiting top mid major type kids-- that formula has worked for Siena in the past-- its worked for Iona and its worked for Manhattan-- Niagara and Mihalic had moderate success with under the radar type kids ... Nothing wrong with under the radar type kids-- but you cant have a team full of them and have consistent success

We were competing against A10, MAAC, AE, and CAA. Indiana came in at last minute when they couldn't fill roster and looked for qualified/graduated kids they could get to move up a class. Indiana has had insane turnover the past few years and he is one of 6 recruits, which never really works. LEt's see where he is in 2 years.

You can't fault the kid for taking the offer from one of the most storied programs in college basketball. That said, I'm betting he'll be transfer fodder within 2 years. It's good that Patsos went after him hard. We'll be on his list again in the future. The funny thing is after this commitment, I bet you his recruit rankings suddenly shoot up into the top 150 so he's now considered a high-major recruit.

SF you are correct Holt is not a Big Ten type recruit- he was however a top flight mid major recruit. Those are type kids Jimmy has to continue to go after. Like I said you won’t win that battle often,( and never when Big ten comes in) but when you do they are usually well worth the effort. Nothing wrong with under the radar type kids, Siena has had considerable success over the years with those types also. You don’t “shy” away from a player like Holt.. Because of the competition, you roll up your sleeves and try to win a few of those battles—and hope a Big ten program doesn’t sweep in last second and steal him. Indiana is spinning the Holt signing saying he is 6’8” when the truth of the matter is he is 6’6” (that’s why he was a mid-major type recruit)

I read his intervew and he basically said "I didn't want to look back when I got older and wonder if I could have done it" Good for him. Hopefully he is all Big Tenn and goes pro and brings pride to upstate NY. If it doesn't, hopefuly we have a ship and opportunity to offer him.

The key at the mid major level is to get on the talent early. You may call it under the radar but I call it recruiting talent and not numbers. The HM level recruits numbers first and talent second. We were on Holt before he blew up and had he committed his ranking would indicate that rather than what it will be now that he will go to Indiana. We would not have known that he would be picked up by the Big Ten..... so no we will lose 5 out of 5 to the Big Ten...but if we get them early we have a chance it just won't look as glamorous....

We got Poole who Minnesota was after and I believe Brett had Big 10 teams on him.

I like the idea that we were on him (and others) early. Sounds like staff has a way to identify talent early. Hope they keep it up and we win some if these battles with higher MMs and lower HMs. I like what I'be seen after Jimmy ( & staff's) first yr. can 't wait for this season to start and see how the freshmen do. Already have higher expectations for returning so for me the freshmen are the unknown (at this point).

Fellas, we need to stop acting like this kid is a major talent. He had ONE OFFER in May, and that was from a school an hour away (Canisius) from his HS. He's a solid Mid-major big man, that can thank the AAU circuit for giving him a stage to showcase himself. I'm gonna guess he was like the 10th PF on Indiana's recruiting chart. After striking out on the first nine, which is rare for a "name school" like Indiana, they had no choice but to reach out to a kid that belongs at a high MAAC/low A-10 school.
There's nothing saying he can't succeed at that level, because maybe he can, but if Crean keeps counting on these type of recruits to get him 25 wins a season, he'll be out of Bloomington real soon.
