This is a huge thing for this team. It will affect everything and determine a big part of the team's upside.
In HS, he was a career 29% shooter from three on 271 attempts. He shot 18% last year.
I want him to shoot better as much as the next guy but I don't know what we can reasonably expect to change.
But nobody is talking about the things he is more likely will improve on:
Steals
Rebounds
Blocks
2 pt FG%
Assist ratio
Based on his HS history he amazingly still has upside in the things he already does well...league leader well.
Steals:
He averaged about 4 steals per game in HS. Almost 100 steals a year in just 26 games a year. Who does that?
The competition he was playing against didn't look THAT bad. He could get to 80 steals this year and I wouldn't be surprised.
Rebounds:
Another year older, another year stronger. Improved year over year in HS.
Blocks:
The kid had 8 blocks in the CBI last year to give him 12 on the year. While the most unlikely facet to improve too much...with his energy 20+ blocks is conceivable out of the PG position. He had 18 and 25 blocks his last 2 years of HS.
2 pt FG%:
Marquis has a unique ability to finish shots from weird angles. And any improvement in shooting will most likely show results in the mid-range area first. He improved in this category like clockwork in HS. He finished 2 pointers at a 58% clip as a senior... How awesome would that be for a PG?
Assist ratio:
He improved on this every year in HS too. The team is a year older. There are more offensive options and the team knows its style and coach. With that comes a better, more efficient running offense.
Bottom line:
He may never be able to improve his range enough to shoot the three well. But that's ok. With Rhamel Brown out of the picture, he could challenge for defensive POY while also garnering the assist crown again. I would much rather have that on this team. The things Wright does are the reasons why his team wins. It's the reason his HS team was like 74-5 over his last three HS seasons. It's the reason why we won 20 games this past year. On top of all this, he's good in end game situations.
He is the biggest advantage the Saints have on gameday. And I look forward to him improving on his strengths this year and taking the Saints up a notch.
