Forgot to say how impressed I was with Long last night too. He was great. Looked like a senior today. Scary how good he can get.
And how far has Ryan Oliver come? ALL of us (except maybe PPC) had him out the door, but he's proved to be a reliable shooter and decent defender with some size on the perimeter. His confidence level has gone from a 1 to a 10 in 2 months. Happy for him!

I think finally managing Long's fouls so he is available for the last 5 minutes is huge, as he makes things happens. ALso Cruz should get player of the game. I think we were down about 10 when he comes in and gets a rebound, smallest player on the court. The team played tougher from that point forward. Agree 100% about Long. We need certain guys available in the game at crunch time. Lavon is certainly one and Marquis is another- that's kind of been my big point for awhile.

And like the other kids on this team..he is a role model for kids as well!

I agree it was a great team win, but it is amazing how good the coaching looks when the ball goes in the hoop and out of bounds plays are executed correctly and how badly the coaching is viewed when the opposite occurs. Interesting the mercurial nature of fans, but that is the way it is everywhere. Winning is the cure all.

Happy for him! couldn't agree more... maybe finally feeling 100% on his knees? and has room to grow, add some more muscle, could (and is) be a real asset on defense, top of zones and more and more the shooter siena needs.

Sounds like you're saying it's all up to chance, particularly with the in-bounds plays. Don't you think a coach is critical in preparing his kids for that?

While I agree with you, Bill that winning is a cure all- last nights game management was stellar by our staff, win or lose. It isn't just the kids that are clicking on all cylinders, the staff is settling in nicely and (as bizarre as it can get sometimes when you are sitting behind the bench) the communication between all four staff members has also been on a upward swing. Happy for all of them, and happy that we fans have a lot to look forward to.

Sounds like you're saying it's all up to chance, particularly with the in-bounds plays. Don't you think a coach is critical in preparing his kids for that? Yes I do think coaching is critical but I believe the coaching is done in practice to prepare the players and through game preparation to establish a game plan but the players have to execute during the game. When they do, the coach looks good and when they don't the coach looks bad. If there is never any execution throughout the season, it certainly falls solely on the coaching for not recruiting players who can execute or not properly instructing them as to execution, see Mitch. It is not chance, success is achieved through preparation. Can a coach lose a game? sure, but I don't think Calipari lost the game with Arkansas last night, that was on his players and he said as much in the post game. So my opinion is that the players are responsible for the majority of the outcome once the ball goes up. On the flip side, if the game plan is flawed and adjustments are not made that falls to the coaches. In close games when the game plan seems to have put the team in a position to win, the players have to make the plays to get over the top, the coaches can't make them for them. Win and all is great, lose and a scapegoat is needed and some fans always look at the coach first. That is the nature of the business. Winning is everything. Lose and you get fired.

Some of the things you say are ludicrous.

Actually, sienasaint3 you might have missed th24's point. Do you not notice the kids between 5-12 on the fan cam during games? Those kids belong to parents who have expendable cash for entertainment. When that entertainment comes in the form of watching exciting basketball, winning more than losing, and getting to support and yes, for some even get to know the players/student athletes it's a prescription (forgive me MissP) for success in the cash register at the foot of the AD's desk. th24 is spot on when he says the players on this team are ALL great role models for kids. I for one wish we would have autograph signings like other teams in the league to connect more kids with the players up close and personal. It's a little hard because we are normally rushed out of the TUC, but it could be done...buy a tshirt or small ball with a logo, have different players out to sign after home games...kids nag parents to come to games.....parents buy season tickets....chaaaa chingggggg.

And that's if we are using sports figures as role models. As Chuck Barkley said I'm not a role model. Not getting into this argument cause that's neither here nor there to the argument. I was just trying to point out that some people on here are unabashed homers. Gotta love what the Saints are doing right now though. Good start to a rebound of the team. I do agree with you should be more students at the games cheering in unison and getting the children who come to games more engaged would be cool to. Something like the lil saints club and if you went to every game and got every players autograph you got something free.

WOW- players like Ryan Oliver are role models for kids-especially kids in the capital region. I can tell you from personal experience, as someone who works in education, that my students love seeing the Siena players in the community and they inspired to be like them!

Something like the lil saints club and if you went to every game and got every players autograph you got something free. [/quote] ............... To dream to be LeBron is, I'm sure shared by many, if not all kids that spend the vast majority of their free time shooting a basketball at a hoop high off the ground. That high level (sorry GB) aspiration has to be cultivated with the reality that you have to be a Ryan Oliver, a Marquis Wright, a Lavon Long long (sorry PPC) before becoming the LeBron they idolize. th24 and GB were talking generic role models - local players at all levels that become "hero of the day" night in and night out. Siena's roster is made up of kids that fit the mold that most parents would like to see their kids using as they develop, mature and compete. I doubt many local kids looked at Ryan Rossiter, when he first donned an ill-fitting Siena uniform, and held him up as a LeBron like model. I bet those same kids had a 180 degree different view of Ryan as he progressed through his four years at Siena. I would also guess there were many young kids on Staten Island that looked up at him in a LeBron type role when he played down there and then announced he would be playing D1 ball at Siena. Expanding on GB's excellent idea regarding autograph or meet the player sessions I would offer the added benefit that getting to know these players a little more than chess pieces on the TUC's floor would demonstrate how they grow and mature during their college careers. That was one of the major highlights of our Annual Year END Awards Banquet when we got to hear these great kids speaking to a huge crowd on their own - a task the majority of those sitting at the tables would dread. Having a son or daughter there to see and hear their favorite players take the podium is a great life lesson for them and might possibly remove a little of the natural fear they would have when asked to get up in front of a crowd of their peers in school. There is way more to take away from this sport than just the final score and stats!

I personally know of a young man that loves the Saints on an entirely different level than a LeBron James. His mom brings him to the games along with her daughter(that loves Rob Poole).. both are very young and def see our Saints as role models. Hymes has replaced his "big brother" that I believe graduated or left the team(I dont have my facts straight) The mom told me her son is very shy and the time that Hymes has spent with her son has been great.... I watched Hymes shoot around with the young man after a practice at the beginning of the season. Mom said her son is coming out of his shell largely due to his interaction with Hymes and the other players... this kid could careless about LeBron James... He loves his saints

I always tell my students there when you see the basketball players at Siena ( like Oliver, Long, Poole ..) not only can they play basketball- but they stay out of trouble and they will graduate from college! This is very important for kids to hear..especially in the inner city where I work!
