When Ryan Oliver was recruited, he appeared to fill a desperate need in Siena's offense: that of a long range sniper. After a sluggish Freshman campaign (and overall '12-'13 season by the team in general) where he only shot 29% from 3, it seems to me like Oliver is beginning to fulfill some of the expectations bestowed upon him when he arrived in Loudonville.
So far this year, Oliver's shooting 36% from beyond the arc, which certainly doesn't qualify for "sniper" status. But, since New Year's, Oliver is shooting 41.3% (12/29) from behind the arc. Moreso, in recent games, he seems to be coming off screens and looking for his shot more than in the past.
I wouldn't want to reduce a player's value to a single attribute, it's clear that Oliver's greatest strength is his ability to hit a jump shot, and if he isn't at least taking those shots to stretch the defense to his side of the floor, his value diminishes. I'd like to see Ryan continue to be aggressive coming off screens and sieze his spot minutes off the bench to maximize his value on the floor. In the Fairfield game thread, I failed to point out his contributions; he had a nice little effort: 10 minutes, 2-4 shooting (1-2 3pt), 2 rebounds, 0 TO's, 2 PF. If he could continue this sort of efficient outing, I think he becomes a very small but important piece to this team down the stretch.

Right now he is the only one I am at all comfortable with taking anything but a wide open 3.

Right now he is the only one I am at all comfortable with taking anything but a wide open 3. I like Ryan's shot, and his release has actually been a little quicker lately (but still not quick). Gotta have some plays that get him more open looks. I'm thinking that Marquis and Lavon can dish to him pretty well as they get more familiar with Ryan.

Oliver is fine when he has his feet set, not so good when he is moving.
Poole is shooting .375 this year after shooting .399 last year, and doing it despite being the guy other teams seek to limit.
Team is at it's best offensively when 2 of the 3 shooters (Poole, Oliver and Hymes) are on the court with Wright, Long and Bisping.

When moving not so much, but even that he has improved on.

This is sort if what I mean when I continue to refer to us as being young & inexperienced. I really don't think most people really understand how hard it is for HS stars to come into D1 programs and make an impact from the start. We were spoiled for awhile. I'd say the Ryans & Bretts are more of the norm than the Wrights & Longs. That's why I believe we see a bigger improvement in White, JO & Wolfe next year than from Wright & Long (simply because Wright & Long are so far ahead of them this year their progress won't be as significant). That's what we're now seeing with Brett & Ryan. Just takes a little longer for some (plus they really weren't given a chance last yr to get confidence).

I definitely think RO should get a few more looks especially w: RP on the floor. Wright and Long are good passers and w/ Poole drawing a lot of attention RO should be getting a few decent shots off ......

I'm hopeful Ryan gets more sets & looks too, I think he's a 10+/night player for us now and he takes some heat off of Poole. But who or what is RP?

I agree, Oliver has become our 3pt specialist. I also agree he is better when he is set. His knee issues make him too slow.
I have wondered what his role would be next year with Patrick Cole joining the mix.

I think he's worked hard enough to gain Jimmy's support. Jimmy wants effort & I believe Ryan has proven that to Jimmy (with all the added shots taken before & after practice). I'd be surprised if he wasn't on the team.
It's looking more like Audu is the odd man out.
Would like to see Hymes stay too but some believe he may leave because he's supposedly finished classes for his degree.

Ryan seems like a fine young man who represents the school in a very positive manner. It also appears that he works hard and wants to do well for his team. Therefore I am happy for him that he has found some success on the hardwood this year. That being said, he does not have the lateral quickness to defend at the level Siena currently plays, let alone the level the team will play at in the near future. So if he or Jimmy decide that it is in his best interest to move on I will respect that decision as much as I will if he remains with the team for the entire period that he is eligible.

I think its very important for Oliver to be on the team next year! I dont necessarily disagree-- but what if Ryan actually wants to play? Ryan gets 12 min a game now- with Patrick Cole being eligible next year, the fact Mo White will continue to improve and arrival of Paige- where do you suggest the minutes come from? I see no way Ryan can play significant minutes next year. But hey maybe that's just me.
