Not a lot going on as we wait to hear about Buie and other OTAs... so a question for the board - who would be on your Siena Mount Rushmore. Many great players (and coaches) have come through Siena. Despite the past three years our basketball program has a rich tradition. Narrow it down to four .... and you can use coaches.
My Siena Mt. Rushmore:
-Billy Harrell (First black player in Siena history, apart of a 27-5 team that won the NCIT Championship, prolific rebounder at 6'1) -Marc Brown (Lead Siena to first NCAA trip and win over Stanford, 32 point NCAA game, all time leading scorer, part of 89 wins) -Kenny Hasbrouck (2 NCAA trips, 2 NCAA wins, 30 point NCAA game, 4th leading scorer in Siena history, part of 85 wins) -Edwin Ubiles (3 NCAA trips, 2 NCAA wins, 3rd all-time leader score in Siena history, part of 97 wins, first Siena player to play in NBA game)

No disrespect to the players you selected but I see a Mt. Rushmore as several notches above a HOF. My choices would be Deane, Hewitt, McCaffery, with the 4th TBD. The three I selected put us on the national stage and kept us there during their tenures. I would also name the Siena "Mt. Rushmore" visitor center after John D'Argenio to recognize his very successful efforts to grow the entire Siena D1 program.

I agree with the trhree coaches you named, but imho D'Arg was never a real AD . Furthermore, how do you give credit to a guy for allowed if not initiated the hires of Beyer, and Mitch. I gave D'Arg a pas on Lanier as Fr. Toal the tool forcaed Lanier on teh program.
No way D'Arg deserves tht much credit.

The hiring of Beyer and Lanier were each embraced by the Siena community, including the fan base. Beyer was our first minority coach and his hire was openly wished for long before Mike's departure. Lanier was seen as an excellent recruiter and an up and coming assistant with big time (U Texas) experience). Mitch's hire was controversial in some circles and the early negative reception from a few proved accurate but his post-Fairfield resume, coupled with his success under Fran, Siena's desire for longer term coaching continuity, and Fran's recommendation carried the day and Siena gave him a chance. The Administration can be faulted for not making the change earlier but we were not privy to those discussions and reasons for not doing it sooner. Many in the sports world commended Mitch on his job during the second injury plagued season. Call his hire a major mistake - one mistake does not always mask the full body of work and John was not alone in the decision. Washington had never won a battle before becoming Commander in Chief yet he was chosen and we all know how that turned out. Overall, our total sports program has shown phenomenal growth during John's tenure. Just my opinion.

My Siena Mt Rushmore:
1. Loudy - through the good and the bad; through coaching changes, AD changes, and upper end zone closures... Loudy was always there routing on the Saints! To leave him off is foolish. 2. MTS - Siena has a rich tradition of winning at home. Why not have the leader of the Siena faithful, MTS, on Mt Rushmore? Seriously, who wouldn't? 3. Billy Harrell - First black player in Siena history, apart of a 27-5 team that won the NCIT Championship, prolific rebounder at 6'1" 4. Mrs. V. - Couldn't think of a 4th person involved with the Siena hoops program, so why not the lady who greeted so many Siena basketball players into the dining hall?

Too soon for it to be carved in stone (couldn't resist) but save a blank face for JP to go along with the other three coaches. With a tip of the cap to the embattled George Zimmer, I think "You're gonna like the way we look" in a couple of years. He can be the Teddy Roosevelt to go along with Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln.

If you create a Mt Rushmore of Coach's don't forget BILL KIRSH who had THE DREAM and fought to bring us back to respectability. Of course his model was DAN .
Lots of Coaching and administrative success.....................don't forget he brought us GRIFFIN and DEANNE

Dan Cuhna needs to be in the discussion. He made Siena relevant long before there was a D-1 designation. As stated his team won the National Catholic Invitational and basically got the Siena hoops program off the ground. He is a Big Who to todays younger generation. He was the precursor to Bobby Knight's philosophy of "4 passes before any shots". He's just a name and a picture in a program to most of Siena's current fans.

Billy Harrell cannot be excluded. Just go into the record book and look up the win loss record of the four years he played. Those four years ( 48-49, 49-50, 50-51' & 51-52) jump out at you compared to the years before and after. Remember these we're against some of the best teams in the country. The Jv's played and beat Albany.
