I was screaming from the rooftops after year 1 with Mitch to fire him and move on! That was the biggest mistake (structuring the contract in such a way where it wasn't feasible to dump him after year 1). I personally didn't mind giving Mitch a chance, but I damn well would have made sure Siena had an out if Mitch proved he hadn't changed his spots. Siena would be in a much different spot had they dumped Mitch 2 years earlier. It's a damn shame.

I am not sure that being a member of the A10 is in Siena's long term best interests.
Lets look at Butler...... Butler burst onto the national stage playing MAAC like opponents in the Horizon League. During its last 6 season in the Horizon League Butler waltzed to the NCAA Tournament with little or no competition....... Last season Butler moved to the A10 and although it still qualified for the NCAA Tournament it finished tied for 3d with a mediocre 11 and 7 record.
The point I am attempting to make is that St.Bonaventure, Duquesne, and other schools have found obscurity in the A10 and I fear that Siena's chances for breaking into the NCAA Tournament will be substantially reduced, while it overall athletic expenses spike upward in the A10 which will no longer have the glamour teams.
The question is: if the A10 no longer has Xavier, Dayton, Butler, St.Louis, Temple, and VCU as members then is it worth the expense for Siena to switch leagues with reduced chance of NCAA invite to play Davidson, The George Washington, Duquesne, St.Bonaventure, St.Joe's, Richmond, Rhode Island, UMass, LaSalle, George Mason and others? ........ I am not convinced that the move to the A10 light is in Siena's long term interest.
___________
I find it humerous that poster "noblesaint" believes that anyone that does not march to the majority opinion is a "trouble maker" (his term).

GF - you may be right. I've had similar concerns but when I see the MAAC expanding with still more Northeast conference teams I think at some point we will be limited. Sure we're the big fish but in any given year there's only 1 team pulling the cart. Most of the MAAC teams don't seem to care much about hoop or just can't afford to spend more. If you look at the rules the A10 conference has for members it is very clear that hoop is their priority. All the schools need to step up. Sure it makes it harder to win but that's why the A10 is RPI 7 and the MAAC is 14. Additionally it would be nice to watch internet feeds that aren't done by the local high school AV club and actually have audio (St. Peters!!!!) It would also be nice to watch the conf tourney on real TV.
It's the old risk-reward thing. I'd say that even without the marquis teams (X, Dayton, etc.) the A10 is still more attractive.

So you prefer to watch sub standard basketball all season? The MAAC is a glorified HS league! Man up, play at the highest competitive level possible. I would prefer to watch Siena in the A10. There is no reason why we can't win in that conference!

So you want to break the bank to play powerhouses Davidson, The George Washington, Duquesne, St.Bonaventure, St. Joe's, LaSalle, George Mason, Rhode Island?
The hard cold reality is that the A10 without Xavier, Dayton, Butler, St.Louis, Temple, and VCU may not be worth the financial investment without further due diligence. Capice?

...Davidson, The George Washington, Duquesne, St.Bonaventure, St. Joe's, LaSalle, George Mason, Rhode Island? Those schools--along with UMass and Richmond, if the winds of realignment don't pull them elsewhere--are exactly who Siena should consider their peer institutions. That's a solid group right there, and travel won't be outrageous without the Midwest leg of the old A-10.

UMass, Davidson, GW, Bona, SJU, GMU an URI have all made the sweet-16 I believe. It may have been a while but still. No matter how you slice it that league is better. Their TV deal alone may make it worthwhile.
How much more do you think this is going to cost? You mentioned breaking the bank. I'd agree that if we go bankrupt it would be a bad deal but we're already spending mid-upper A10 money ... and we're in the MAAC. Looking at the way the A10 does travel (esp for the non-hoops teams) it looks like it wouldn't be much more, if any, than the MAAC. We're already spending a bunch on facilities. What am I missing?

Take this post and consider its source- this is same guy who in February that Mitch would be back , Siena couldn't afford the buy out. Glens Falls clearly has trouble understanding economics of modern day D1 basketball.

An honest answer would be payroll. Conference rules will either limit or mandate the number of full-timers and part-timers you can have on staff per sport. The MAAC's Olympic sport programs tend to be fairly interested in cost containment. The A-10 is similar where it focuses resources on basketball, but not by as much, and so Siena would need to increase some annual expenses in those non-revenue sports. But we need the Big East to want to expand before the A-10 would want to expand, so we'll see what happens next year. I hope Siena keeps their options open, because I don't think this is finished yet.

This is the group of folks that think dunkin donuts bagel breakfast sandwiches are great. They don't notice the processed eggs or the disgusting "bagel" bread. It's good enough for them. Well god bless you, it's not for me. I want Siena to move up and compete at the highest leVel. Frankly I would rather starve then live your life of mediocrity. So easily satisfied with a subpar existence, like our previous coach! No thank you!
