Shrinking D-1 membership isn't gonna happen. No one's gonna tell the MEAC and SWAC that their day in the sun is over. No one's gonna tell Longwood and Cal State Bakersfield to go back to the kiddie table. One way they could slow D-1 expansion is by adopting the rule that FBS football has, that you can't reclassify until you have an invite to a conference at that level. That would still let the WACs and A-Suns replenish their membership numbers, but it would be on their terms. I'm calling for a freeze, not flat out demoting teams. No new members period. This would stop the bleeding and is absolutely necessary as the talent level has deteriorated so much that the masses are starting to catch on. Teams do choose to go down a level on their own; Siena even did it once. The media and announcers like Bill Walton are blaming low scoring on the kids not practicing hard enough and the parents and CYO coaches not teaching fundamentals, but this is not the case. It's sheer numbers causing the problem. One thing the NCAA could do if they were serious (I agree they are not) would be to demote teams that don't follow the rules. How about Connecticut playing DII for a year? That would be a hoot. Then put a heavy penalty payable to the general scholarship fund to regain entry -- some little schools would give up and that's how they would eventually get back to the 300 level more indicative of quality Division 1 play.

"We like the idea of having an earlier influence on them both academically and athletically." (Montana's Wayne Tinkle)
I'm 100% with moving practices up two to three weeks, and I think it can have nothing but positive effects on the team. Getting into basketball mode earlier before a semester's burden picks up would be academically beneficial. This just happens to be a great year for this rule to be put into place as the team can become a bit more of a cohesive unit under the new coach and new system. This will mitigate the discrepancy between teams learning new systems and teams perfecting systems that are in place. Wish it could be left unsaid that more basketball might mean less time to get into trouble too.
As far as the shot clock goes, I could see it going either way. I do appreciate the diversity that the 35 brings, but I would probably prefer a 30 second shot clock. I don't feel that 30 would bring a vast change to the game. It generally seems like teams have all the time in the world when a coach yells to slow it down and players take their time getting over half court. Since a team can slow down and run their system in 25 or 26 seconds, I don't think any coaches will go on strike over the change to a 30 second shot clock.
