Its his bread and butter and what he has recruited for over 20 years....You'll get a few kids from those NYC/Philly areas.....but most of our targeted recruits will be the DC area

the one comment Patsos has made that I didnt like was flat out saying he wasnt going to recruit the NYC area. I think he meant he wouldnt recruit it as hard as other areas but you have to be careful saying something like that as it can be used against you on the recruiting trail

I had heard last year that we and other MAAC school were targeting the DMV more because most of those kids can qualify whereas NYC and Philly kids have a greater percentage of kids who are harder to get in. Might be part of his thinking. As NY tax payer, makes me feel great

I think he's just playing to his strengths. Obviously he's developed great relationships in the DC/Balt area, and wants to take advantage of that instead of butting heads with the rest of the MAAC for the same kids in the Metro NY area.

If he can recruit the New England prep schools in addition to the DMV and the 518, I think we'll do just fine.

You can however say that you plan on focusing in another area. a minor trip over words on his part but still should not have been said quite so explicitly

How can that be used against him? If he is recruiting a kid in NYC/NJ an competing coach could say patsos said he wasn’t recruiting NY/NJ and of course Jimmy says well I’m recruiting you aren’t I? end of conversation. Jimmy will go where the kids are, he knows the Baltimore/DC corridor , I think Jimmy will be pleasantly surprised when he recruits Philly/NY/NJ area, that the Siena name will carry a bit more cache than Loyola name did in those parts

Maybe that turns a kid off that might have pursued siena? maybe it is used against him. who knows. As I said... a trip on words on his part. Hopefully he doesnt say it again. These kids want to be sought after, not made to feel like an after thought. Not a major deal but I wouldnt go around saying I wasnt going to recruit ... well.. anywhere. ESPECIALLY the area that has provided a significant amount of success to the Siena program.

Take this or leave it...
If you are this concerned over Patsos making that comment, be prepared for a lot more. the guy is ridiculously candid and always in front of a camera / microphone. He says a lot of things you will not like. Enjoy ;-)

What I recall him saying is that he is wary of recruiting the NYC area because there are so many schools in the vincinity to compete with as opposed to the MD, DC, VA region. He didn't say he absolutely wouldn't recruit NYC and he didn't mention Philly at all if memory serves.

Enjoy ;-) I think you may be right- but I also expect him to improve in that area- as his opportunity to interact with the media will be ten fold at Siena compared to Loyola—a place where he was always fighting for exposure

It isn't a matter of improving. This is who he is. He won't turn into coachspeak. He says what is on his mind and doesn't parse words or consider phrasing. It is part of the Jimmy package. It is a gift, honestly, that will endear him to media but you may occasionally have a cringe-worthy moment. Take that bad with all the good.
